Elephant Powder ?
« on: April 01, 2005, 12:04:14 AM »
I read a while ago that they've gone under. But, there is still alot of it floating around. I also heard some lots were really bad as far as fouling goes. Anyone know what dates are the ones to stay away from?

ya their done.
The gist of the debate over good vrs. bad lots, had largely to do with ambient moisture in a given region or season of year, and the individuals shot too shot bore condition ritual. The stuff would work great in Nevada in the summer, yet awfull in Florida at the same tyme. Guy's would have trouble in the winter/rainy season in Texas, and it'd work great in the dry air winters of the Great Lakes. (get it?)

Those debates where/are about 3-4 years old now. I remember some extensive logging of lot#'s on a few sights at that time, perhaps a reveiw of "archived" info from 2yrs back or better will yeild a better idea of what was happening.

If you can get Elephant for 8-9$ a pound or so, don't hesitate to buy. The stuff will shoot if you do your part. Much over that is inflated prices,,mites just well buy fresh stuff

I had some of the Elephant crap powder. Like to have never gotten rid of it all. (took 3 years)   Very accurate powder but horrendous fouling especially the 2F. Overglazed, not enough moisture, etc. 3F was not quite as bad as the 2F, but still low velocity & slow ignition.  Over a 1 second delay in ignition in a flintlock, compared to 2 dif. lots of Goex, 1 lot of Scheutzen & 1 lot of Swiss.  Been looking for the date codes & thought I had them but can't find where I put it.  In fact, I got a call yesterday from the supplier I bought it from & he was apologizing about all the trouble I had with it........

I wouldn't take Elephant now if they were giving it away..... well........ yes I would...... it makes good lawn fertilizer & make the grass look nice !   :-)

I bought 5 lbs Elephant 3F and it was absolute garbage...delayed igniton and horrible fouling, couldn't begin to shoot it in my flintlocks.

Tried it in my percussions in hopes of being able to salvage something out of it, still couldn't use it due to delayed ignition.

Poured 4.5 lbs of it on bare ground in 10' lines and set fire to it.
It was LOT# 034, Date Code 24/99.

By contrast I'm on my second case of Goex and it's perfect...fast. clean, and accurate in all flintlocks and percussions.

I wouldn't bring a can of Elephant into the house if you gave it to me.

I had a whole case of the crap! I used about 1lb. of it and then founf a guy that was looking for a deal! I got the best end of that deal and I lost money on it! I too wiped after every shot, when I was done with that I wiped the bore. I was so mad at that stuff I ruined my shorts every time I shot it! This is supposed to be fun and it is now that I got rid of it.

I've got 3-4 lbs. of 3F I bought probably 10 years ago and it is ok.  Ignition has been fine in cap locks and I've never tried it in my flinters.  Accuracy was as good as GOEX but that is the filthiest burning stuff I ever saw.  I suspect what I have left will last a long time.  I only use it now in a duplex load for one of my cartridge double rifles and it works fine with 5 gr. of 4759 under it.
