6.5JDJ conversion for a 10" barrel
« on: February 12, 2003, 01:06:48 PM »
Any opinions on whether it's worth it to convert a 10" barrel into a 6.5 JDJ.  If it were a 14" barrel, I wouldn't be quite so concerned, but I just wonder if it would be worth the expense in dies, shipping, and conversion costs.

Anybody know how it would compare to a 14" 7-30 for velocity?

My main thrust in life will be for deer hunting at 150yds and less.

I'd stick with the TCU.  The 6.5 JDJ is a great round, but I think it needs the extra 4 inches.

Here's another vote for not rechambering your 10" 6.5 TCU barrel to 6.5 JDJ, as I too think a 14" tube is needed to get the full potential for the bigger case.

I have a 14" hunter barrel chambered in 7-30, and it's a great hunting cartridge for the Contender. I just size and fireform new 30-30 brass using the same technique reccommended for Herretts and haven't had any problems to speak of. At similar operating pressures, I wouldn't expect to see much difference between the 6.5 JDJ and the 7-30.

You've convinced me to not do a 10" barrel.  I did ask JD how it would compare to the 7-30 in a 14" barrel and he 'forgot' to reply about that part of my message.  I have a 7-30 and will stick with that.  I just thought the profile of the 6.5 bullet would be a little better than the same wt in the 7-30.  But I don't want to sacrifice MV to use it.
Thanks for the opinions.
