Well, gang, I think a shot cartridge for the .500 would be a nice thing to have. What would make a nice 1/2" (.500) diameter container that could be loaded with shot? Do they make plastic vials or test tubes of the correct diameter? Didn't I see .500 gas checks for sale somewhere? If the .500 case is based on the .348 Win, then why not get some of those cases, cut them off to cylinder length, and contain the shot with gas checks top and bottom? Your thoughts....

The 500 Mag is not based on the .348 Win, it was developed with it's very own case diameter.

You idea sounds like it would work, but I don't know how it well it will clear the compensator, and I don't intend on turning my 500 Mag into a snake & rat killer.

I have an 8 3/8 and a 4 bbl. Someone mentioned that the 4 inch is for griz and that caused me to think about the six years I lived in Alaska and then to big-game hunting and while way out in the bush would often run into flocks of spruce grouse or ptarmigan which could easily be picked off with shot cartridges in my bear revolver. On the way back to camp it's an easy way to add a little fresh meat to the comunal cook-pot. And, yes, they're pretty dumb birds -- you would have time to dump your solids and reload with shot cartridges. Such was my line of reasoning....

hmm would the compinsator be removed like the 4'' one if so get ahold of mike at ott have him make you a none ported compinsator to fill in the gap

This months Handloader magazine has an article on shot loads. The author doesn't use a .500 S&W though.

That's what the author of the article did for .45 Colt shot loads, except he used regular .45 Colt cases. First gas check seated cup up, scoop the shot into the case, seat the second gas check cup down and hold it in place with a good crimp. I would be concerned about the compensator though too. BTW, there was a .500 based on the .348 Win, but it was the .500 Linebaugh if I remember correctly. HTH!

loco, I thought about this with my 45-70 contender.I did not have a lot of luck though. The rifling screws up the pattern after a few yards.I decidecd that I will carry a .22 rf hand gun for the occasional partridge or rabbit I run across.
If you have time to dump the rounds from the cylinder & reload,I think you'd have time to draw a 22. That 22 MIGHT be lighter than a pocket full of .500's also.

I think it would be nice for S&W to come up with a shot load for the S&W 500 or Cor bon to make it. They could make it with a plastic shot cup that way it wouldn't interfear with the Brake.

I recall patent compensators (e.g. the Cutts) and chokes on older shotguns. Many were from the days before shot collars and plastic finger wads. Was there a problem with them? My original question was to the effect that I was seeking something that might make an appropriate shot container; something like a 1/2" diameter plastic vial or test tube. The April sales paper from Midway lists Hornady .500 gas checks at $18.99/1000 (product number 623-008). I'm up to my ears in other projects right now so I guess I'm just trying to stimulate interest.
