New .357
« on: April 01, 2005, 05:40:11 PM »
Hi all,
Well yesterday me and my Dad went to the gun shop and got a new pair of 2" inch rev. . He got Taurus in .38 spec. blued. I got a Rossi .357 in SS.

I know there not top of the line and I know that I'm not going to "WOW" the forums with this news. I guessed figered I'de share my experiences with you all. I have a few handguns (.44mag/.50 AE desert eagle, Glock 22 .40cal., and a hand full of Kimber TLE swat/bp10-2, stainless customs, and two SFA fullsize), but I have no rev. and I was not sure I was going to like it much so I stayed in a lower price range.

I really like the 2 guns me and my oldman picked out, he got the air weight frame, I did not I like heavy guns. Always have. They shot great out to about 30-35 feet then it goes down hill fast, but inside that I was touching holes with holes. Very tight groups.

I am very happy and proud of them and just wanted to share with you all. I have along way to go with rev.  I hope to learn more and hopefully get into a nice top end S&W or something like that. One of the biggest things is I have a CCW and 5"inch custom 1911s can be a little bit of a pain to carry in the heat of the summer. I know I could have went with a compact Kimber, but, I just wanted a little change.

Now last can some one tell/teach me a few things about rev. .

1st-How does a magnum get its name? A .38 spec. to me seems very close to a .357 but in fps there is no comparison.

2nd-How many load types are there for the .357?

3rd-How does the .357 hold vs. the .45CAL?

4th-Were should I take rev. from here? Longer bbl or bigger Cal. or both?

and last I know, I know, get a S&W.

Any help would be very cool.

                                            Thanks
                                                 Dave.

Hi Dave, welcome to the world of wheelguns!

I started with sixguns many years ago, wandered off into auto's, now I have a smattering of both, and I'm happy with my options.  Autos may hold more but that's necessary for me, because I shoot revolvers a lot better, hence don't need as many shots.  All my wheelguns hold five or six rounds, there's something sacreligious about an eight-shot revolver!  Unless if course it's a 22.  Personally, while you have lots of choices in what to buy next, I'd suggest a good 22 revolver, prefereably a Smith.  Lots of companies make good revolvers, but only Smith makes a Smith!

I also own a Rossi, a 38 3-inch, that was passed down from a dear relative who never shot it.  It needed a trigger job badly, but after doing one, I can keep all five shots on a paper plate at 30 feet, about the farthest I ever shoot it.  My Smith is good for soda cans out to 75 yards, the Rossi is not.  The Smith also has my best-ever trigger job and is more sturdy, hence it holds better.  It is a 65 three-inch, what I consider the best all-around packing/house gun extant.  The trigger on this gun has to be felt to be believed, the first question I get when people try the trigger is, "does it ever misfire?" because it feels too light to be reliable.  And no, it has never misfired, in something over 5,000 rounds of factory ammo and assorted handloads.  A great trigger can make an average gun into a wondergun, you might look into that if your Rossi is a little rough, or feels too stiff.

Shooting 357's out of a snubbie is not a joyous experience for most folks, me included.  I generally shoot 38+P's out of my Smith, and standard ammo out of the Rossi, to keep the evil flinchies away.  But the first requirement for a defensive gun is that it fit my hand, and it took awhile to find the right grip for small hands with very long fingers.  I settled on a Pachmayr Compac grip, it carries well, holds securely in a IWB holster, and gives me a secure grip.  But you have to figure out what fits you best, try as many as you can get your paws around!

Good luck, and welcome to the round-gun club!

The story goes the "magnum" thing got started by a Wesson of S&W. He liked magnums of champagne so when the .38 spcl was increased 1/10 of an inch longer he named it the .357 magnum. My house gun is a 4" Rossi .357 so I won't fault your purchase.  My wife's carry gun is a light weight Taurus .38 much like the S&wy "Body Guard" snubby. I like stainless firearms. You don't have to have them but I like them. IMHO a revolver is the best house gun in a handgun. All of the springs are in their natural state of rest so no springs take a set. A stainless handgun will rust if you really neglect it but not if you do a little preventative maint.

The .45 ACP was designed to be the most power the average shooter could master. A .357 has more recoil and the .38 +P loads in a light short barreled handgun will jump around a bit too. Learn to shoot double action accurately at short range and you'll do fine. If you have to use your handgun for protection being able to shoot double action and hit your target could be a life saver.

For your next handgun purchase I'd get a .22 revolver if you don't have one. You can shoot it more with less fatigue and for less $$$.

Thanks for the INFO guys. As far as .22lr goes, the only thing I have that in is a Walther p22. Once agin I know alot of people trash talk that hand gun, but I love that damn thing. I have put hundreds and hundreds of rounds though it and it is just a blast so play with. I put the bll ext. on it and the Walther lazer sight. My wife loves it to death. She is no big gun fan at all. I messed that up a few years back when she had not ever shoot a gun and a kinda tricked her into shotting my .50AE DE. It has been down hill from there, but she likes the .22 Walther. I think you guys are right I'll look into a .22 rev.

Also I would like to get into a little bit of pistol hunting. I hunt small verm. with my 1911s in .45ACP but I would like to do a little more then that.

Any input?

                                     Thanks.
