A "Different" Model 29
« on: April 02, 2005, 09:56:26 AM »
Well, maybe not all THAT different, but I've never come across one with an unfluted cylinder AND a non underlugged 6 inch barrel. It is a Model 29-5 with a serial number that puts it right about December 1989.

It's like a Classic Hunter, only with a regular barrel, or like a regular 29 with an unfluted cylinder.

Its like brand spankin' new, and the bluing is mirror bright, and deep blue/black.  I'm not a big fan of RUBBER, but these feel decent, and are the ones that came on it, with the S&W medallions. But.....I'll be looking for some WOOD for it soon.

I have a feeling it was a special order, as the Std. Catalog shows nothing like this one.  Or maybe its somebody's Frankenpistol?

No matter, it will be a fun shooter, and not a safe queen.

I had a buddy of mine post some questions about it over on the S&W forum for me. I'm sure some of those guys will  know. I'm not allowed to "play" over there.   8)

This M-29 started as a generic "Dirty Harry Special" with a 6 1/2" bbl and blue finish.
I sent it to the S&W custom shop for a 4" bbl, pinned Patridge front sight, narrow, smooth trigger and action job.
The hard chrome is by Bob Cogan.

It could have been from a special production run S&W did for a distributor.
Some of the gun makers will or used to do this for their larger customers. I have a Rem. 700V with a blued fluted barrel that was done as a special run item.
Anyhow, it's a sweetheart you got there! Enjoy!
