12 guage/.222 Rem. Savage 2400 Combi (by Valmet)
« on: April 02, 2005, 10:54:45 AM »
I was looking at my Savage 2400 today, and thought maybe i'd show you a couple pictures of it here.

Before Valmet made there model 412 combi's they made these combi's and Savage brought them in as "2400's".   When you see both guns side by side, you can see thay are very similar.  The 412 action is slightly bigger and also stronger!

The only two cal's i've seen 2400's in, are 12-.308 Win., and 12-.222 Rem. like this one.  I bought mine in the 70's and i have shot a truck load of small game with it!!!

The top of the rib is shaped with the bases "machined into it" to accept Sako rings, and it's a very solid system!!!  (I have "expermental" 412 bbl. sets that accept these same Sako rings)

The rear sight can be ajusted for windage only, and the rifle bbl. can be ajusted for windage and elevation!!!  This system to ajust the rifle bbl. works perfectly, and was carried over to the 412's.

The single trigger is selective, and the tang safety is "auto" going on when you open the action.  I never liked single trigggers or auto safeties!!  On my 412's i've always installed double triggers and deactivated the auto safety!!!

My 2400 is an absolute tack driver!!!  I've hand loaded hundreds and hundreds of 22 Win. mag. "velocity" loads for small game use.  It's not picky at all and has shot well with many different loads includeing the factory loads i've fired.

When handloading i made (swaged) most of the bullets myself useing "spent 22lr cases" for the jackets!!  I liked to turn the jacket up side down so the finished bullet was a FMJ, that way it didn't ruin too much meat on the small animials i was shooting.

One time many years ago i sold this gun and then regretted it later!!  I was lucky that when the friend i sold it to was leaveing Alaska, he sold it back to me!!!

Anyway, i pretty much quit shooting this combi when Valmet started bringing there 412's into the U.S.!!  They have all the things i thought was missing on the 2400's.

  Hope you like the pictures!!

Nice pics, beautiful gun Drilling man. As far as I know, the only calibers the 2400 was brought out in by savage were the 222, and 308. If you are interested, I have catalog specifications from the Savage catalogs from the 70's, displaying your gun & specs, on the Savage 24 Discussion board.
Go to www.savage24.com , click on the 'photo gallery' button, then click on 'savage catalogs', they'll be listed by year. If you then click on the catalog you want, it will display the specs for you. I have all these specs on my computer also, so if you're interested in any of the specs for your gun, let me know which catalog you want the specs for, and I'll email them to you. Incidentally, those catalog specs were scanned as full size jpegs, and they are quite clear & legible, and worth having.
Sincerely,
 Garry

Thanks Wink man,

You have a great site, and lots of good pictures and other info there!!!  It takes a bit of work to have a decent site, so thanks again for shareing it!

I was always going to get my 2400 rechambered to 30-06, but i heard the 2400 would shoot loose with lots of "heavy" loads in .308's, so i never took the chance of rechambering it!!!

I wanted a 30-06 VERY bad, and i was jumping up and down when the 412's came out!!  I was liveing in Alaska at that time, and i considered the 30-06 with 200 grain Nosler partitions the min. gun i wanted to be wondering around with.

I have some old Savage brochures around here someplace, if i run on to them again maybe i can scan them in for your site????  I'm not sure of the years though, maybe you already have them?

I appreciate it Drilling Man, if you can find them, and are willing to scan them, I'll gladly take them. and like I said, if you want any of those catalog specs for your 2400, let me know, and I'll email them to you. Thats not my site, just a conglomeration of people who tried to put their heads together on the combination guns. As the site says, it for combination guns, not just savage 24's, so please feel free to drop in at anytime and post if you wish, the more the merrier, and they're are all good guys there, they will make you feel welcome!!!!!!!!
Sincerely,
 Garry
