Remington Custom Shop - model 7600 rifle
« on: April 02, 2005, 10:55:24 AM »
Hi:

I was looking at Remington's Custom Shop website and I see that the model 7600 rifle can be made in their custom shop. Does anyone know if it can be made in any other calibers besides the one's that are in their regular line of 7600 rifles?

Thanks,

Not sure about calibers offered, best bet is to call Remington and ask for the custom shop. 1-800-243-9700.   The 2005 Rem catalog does not list either the 7400 or 7600 offerings from the CS.  Perhaps the website has different information.

Personally, I wouldn't waste my money on a Rem 7600 as if the price is comparable to their bolt action offerings, be prepared to spend $1400 to $1800 !!

Added the fact that these rifles have been known to suffer from accuracy problems.   IMHO, $1500 + for a rifle that shoots > 1" MOA (3-shot group) is a waste of money.

You can order a 7600 from the custom shop. And Cajun is correct, you will pay a premium. Calibers are limited to what is currently in the catalog, but you can have custom stock, forearm configurations as well as "F" grade receiver engraving.
As for accuracy, this is the first I have ever heard of accuracy problems with the 7600's. They are quite capable of 1" groups. Some folks tend to forget they are not a "bench" tool but a hunting rifle. They will give you "minute of deer" all day long!!!!!
It is NOT unethical to shoot at running deer. That's hunting!!

Just my .02 worth.  Though I never ever expected it, I have shot one in 270 and one in 308 and both these rifles would hold 1.5 are better groups consisently and the 308 is a new one.

My 7600 carbine (in .35 Remington) is quite an accurate rifle, consistently grouping 1.5 inches at 100 yds. with factory ammo. No accuracy problems here!

Cajun, maybe you are confusing the semi-auto remington with the pumps. The remington semi-auto in all the models from 740 to present don't have a good reputation for accuracy. However the pumps do. My personal experience ,though limited, would agree with this. Regards, Byron

The 7600 is not listed on the current Remington Custom Shop website. http://www.remington.com/firearms/custom/custom.htm

A better way to go, IMO, would be to have the factory-stock rifle worked over by a good custom gunsmith.  That way you can specify exactly what is important to you and not have to pay for engraving you don't like, etc.  A quality barrel and chambering job can make these rifles into sub-moa tack drivers in whatever appropriate chambering you choose.  I had mine redone into a .338-06 and it cuts consistent 0.8 moa 3-shot groups with  loads it likes - pretty decent for such a cartridge.  A .25-06 or similar would be a real accurate and powerful deer rifle, and you'd surprise your fellow hunters by shooting groups smaller than their factory bolt guns.  Accuracy with the Remington 760/7600 has been noted for decades to be exceptional, in many cases better than comparable bolt rifles.  As stated above, the 740/742 gas guns have a more spotted history...

Work needed for accuracy:
*  high quality barrel with a good chamber and crown
*  reworked trigger for sub-2 lb let-off
*  polished action for increased smoothness
*  heavier hammer spring for faster lock time
*  quality scope appropriate for intended use, mounted low
*  different stock depending on intended use

FWIW my stock Rem 7600 30/06; circa 1988, will put 3 BULLETS; 150's, 165's, or 180's INTO, <MOA @ 150YDS EVERY DAY, ALL DAY LONG! These are hand loads; NOT FACTORY AMMO.

I had a 7600 Carbine in 30-06. It would shoot 1.5 inch groups with factory Remington 150 gr. Core-Lokt ammo. My had the same rifle and it shot just as good!
