Red dot scopes ?
« on: April 03, 2005, 03:40:52 AM »
Not a Handi subject but talking about scopes on another thread made me want to post this hear. I want to put a red dot on my hand gun and other then the tasco scopes on my kids 22's i have no experience with them so i was hoping you guys could reccommended a few. It is a ruger super blackhawk .44 mag. with a 4 5/8" barrel. I dont want to use my sights even though the max range would be 50 yards and most likely would be 20-35 yards So if you could give me some models and an idea on prices it would be a big help. Thanks Tanoose

my concern for hunting at 50 yds the dot can grow larger than the 8" target so do not buy at  any price until you look down the tube

The size of the dot is constant and will cover less of the target the closer you are to the target.  For example a dot that covers 6" of the target at 100 yards will only cover 3" at 50 yards.  That's what makes red dots good for up close, quick shots such as you would get in thick Northeastern woods.

Ok i moved this question to the handgun section . But while we are hear i am now courious as to if any of you guys use red dots for close range deer hunting i would think they would work well on the 30/30 or 45/70.I myself prefer scopes but i did mount a red -dot on the kids 22 when they were having trouble hitting coke cans  Putting on the red-dot allowed them to hit everything they aimed at. And its funny as they dont use them any more as they graduated to scopes now.

I use a BSA 30mm red dot on my .357 max . These sights are very fast on target as the only thing you have to focus on is the target. While they may not be as precise as a scope I have no trouble picking off bowling pins at 100 yds. As for the size of the dot I find that if I turn the brightness down from the max setting I can look through the dot for a bit finer sight picture. Now I've tried them on handguns and  I find you have to "hunt" for the dot too much for fast shooting.

I'm a pretty decent shot with a handgun using standard open sites, but when i've shot handguns equipped with red dots the dot just dances dances all over the target.  :)  :)  :) .   Those red dots will really show you in a hurry how unsteady your hold actually is.   They are great for speed shooting plates and pins but are too course (and distracting as heck to me) for precision target shooting.  They are also great for jump shooting deer in tight cover with a slug gun or short range rifle like the 30-30.

Most now offer a 3 MOA dot.  It only covers 3" at 100yds, 1 1/2" at 50.  I have one I am going to mount on my WIn 375 BB.  I have a peep sight on it but think the red dot will be fasater to use and more accurate (for me).

Got a 4moa red dot on my bow and no problem out to sixty yards.  I think it would be the cat's meow out to 100-150yds on a deer size target with a rifle.

I've used red dots on both handguns and rifles. I think that they serve very well out to 150 yards, where even a 4 minute dot is only going to cover 6 inches of the 8 inch kill zone. I have problems picking up the dot in bright sun, but most of my whitetails have been taken in shadow or other dim light. Good shooting..mt
