Please forgive me, but I just finished this project. I have several NEF/H&Rs but nothing customized yet, so I thought I would share this with you.
A few weeks ago, a friend who has a shop in a near by town talked me into buying this old Westpoint 949 (Savage 94) in 12 ga with Improved Mod. choke. I gave him 50.00 out the door for it.
Since I have this gun in .410, 16 Ga. and 10 Ga., I thought I would add a 12 for the heck of it. Wood was that nasty rust colored orange looking finish that showed little grain. Barrel had surface rust, so did reciever. I stripped all the rust off, blued with Oxpho, and refinished the wood in a way I never have before. It was an experiment. I had a light colored Minwax wood stain that I ended up mixing with some hunter green enamel I had in a can. I stripped the wood down to bare, smoothed, and applied my experimental wood finish. When it dried completely, I began to remove it with fine steel wool. I knew the green would soak into the wood and show grain. I kept working it with the steel wool until I got what you see in the pic. My son talked me into using the torch to create the stripes when the wood was still bare.
It was for fun, I enjoyed the little project, not out any money, barrel looks new, reciever is perfect, and wood is , well, it is what it is. I shot it today at the range and it performed flawlessly, busted a few targets. I am ready for any criticism now.
