What giveswith the Feral Cats topic being locked?
« on: April 04, 2005, 01:50:34 PM »
What gives this thread was not disruptive or were folks getting on each other with personal attacks ect so except for being a bit controversial why lock it??? I have seen a lot worse threads that that one that was allowed to continue?? Also for who locked it be it moderator or Bill a explanation why would be nice when a thread is locked. If I lock one I do that so at least folks know why. To be honest I did not even see it was locked until a other member asked me why. SO that is why I posted this.  Jim

Well if I had to guess WHY it is that so many seem to forget that most of these forums are also being seen by others, like family members who are offended by the description of the way some of the posters were saying they used to get the cats s and by the way the SSS could also stand for SHAME,SHAME,SHAME!     JIM

Give me a break when cats cross the line over to feral they are no better than any other preditor.  Just because it was a pet once or a pet that is not controled does not make it a  candidate for the bambi syndrome. I posted the thread as it is a viable question that is going to be brought up to vote on on the WI Conservation Congress hearings. Wether you like the idea or not is is a fact of life that some ones pussy cat can be a deadly preditor and steps are being taken to control it. Again like I said a explanation would have been nice so all would know. As a moderator I would have appreciated it too. Oh by the way some folks keep dangerous snakes and other critters for pets too like the large cats, Wolves, ect if one of them was on your property and you felt that it was doing damage or putting some one in danger would you just ignore it and say well some one may not be happy with this if I destroy it as it is not PC. Not every thing is black and white some grey areas always exist. Jim

Might I inquire what gives you the right to lock something because of what the SITE OWNER said?  If GB thinks it's ok to post then you got nothing to say about it.  Period.

If nothing else a thread like this may open the eyes of some irresponsible pet owners who could use some education on the subject and yes that may include wives and kids. Like I said before it is more of the pet owners neglect than the dropped off pet or roaming pet that causes the problems. If the cat cannot roam and unwanted pets distroyed instead of dropped off out on a side road than the problems would be solved. Before you cat lovers jump on us that would shoot feral cats look in the mirror and see what steps you could have taken so Tabby would not have been shot or run over.

First time I'v heard that. Dont really doubt it but I am suprised that if its true I'v not heard it before. I stopped shooting the cats what come in my yard. I let the dog get them now. He likes chasing them & unlike alot of dogs Sam dont get discouraged if they fight back.  :D

DID a web search on sheila's posting of bobcats and housecats and found this:

Bobcats eat about two pounds of food per day. They prefer to eat freshly killed meat. If large prey is killed, the leftover food is covered with grass, dirt, often sticks, and the bobcat returns to the carcass before it begins to spoil. Carrion is only eaten if the animal is starving. The main diet of the bobcats consists of cottontail rabbits, jackrabbits, mice and rats. They also eat squirrels, chipmunks, skunk, beaver, muskrat, grouse, wild turkey and other ground nesting forest birds and their eggs. Bobcats also kill deer especially in winter when the deer is weak and close to starvation or when wounded or killed by hunters. When available bobcats will also kill livestock, poultry, small pigs, lambs and sheep, as well as feral and domestic cats. Although bobcats will kill housecats, there are records of the two species hybriding.

I, for one, would have appreciated an explaination as to why the thread was locked. Feral cats are a big problem for everyone, especially the birds and small game. True, the birds may not belong to me, but I get a lot of pleasure watching them. Someone posted about the amount of birds and game killed each year by these vermin, I don't remember where I saw it. For me, any cat running loose is a feral cat. Closest neighbor is 1/4 mile away and has NO cats, she doesn't like them either. My Moms neighbor in Ill has a cat that comes over daily and ambushes birds at moms feeder, I intend to remedy that next trip back home. POWDERMAN.  :x  :x  :x  :x  :x  :x

I did give an explaination and said the topic would be deleted tonight which it will when I see it.

Shooting cats is ILLEGAL in most states. We're not here to talk about doing things that are illegal. If you feel you must do something which is not legal then do it but keep quiet about. Don't go bragging to the world about it. Remember SSS.

Now I'm locking this one and tomorrow it too will go away. Guys I cannot allow discussions of illegal activities on this site. It's a violation of my contract with the server provider. So like it or not we're NOT gonna talk about doing things that are illegal here. Not in a manner that condones it. Clear?
