The experiments with cast in the .30-30 have begun.
« on: April 04, 2005, 01:54:12 PM »
These are the first of the tests using 158gr .311 Spire Point cast GC bullets provided me by LeftoverDJ. Once I stumble on to something worth pursuing, I'll extend the range to 100 yards.
I'm testing only IMR 4198 until the load range has been tried from the bottom to the top, then other powders will be tested. The next in line will be H-335, or BW 36  which is a H-322 clone. I also have two other of DJ's bullets to run through the test. This could take a while.
I again checked the twist rate just to make sure. It is a confirmed 1-12".
I haven't slugged the barrel but I'm shooting only leftoverdj's hard cast .311 gas check bullets in my tests. My NEF sb2 was purchased new in 1992 at Clark Brothers in Warrenton VA.
I am open to advice and good suggestions in this test with my NEF sb2.

If you have some you may want to try some 2400. I use 9-10 Unique for the light loads and RCBS shows 17-18 grains of 2400 as max for their bullets. I get better groups with the 2400 than the 4198.

You're ahead of me I have this moving thing happening right now so that 's taking up a lot of time. Rifle magazine had a really good article in it a while back about shooting casts in the .30-30. They seemed to get good results with Red Dot. I bought some, along with a box of Lazercasts from Cabellas. As soon as things slow down a bit I'll be getting started with that.

You guys are killing me, I'm in the process of putting a house on my place in the country and don't have the time for alot of reload work.  :(
It'll be alright soon tho when I get that hunnerd yard range up and runnin in my back yard and a 500yrd spot just around the hill.

I've got Deer, turkey, rabbits, grouse, and squirel, with reports of bear and elk being seen near by. My living arangements are looking up. 8)

Bob,
In in no better shape than you. We've moved into our new house but only have 4 blinds up on the windows thus far. It's kind of like camping out. Working every day and everything else makes it hard to get anything extra done.

Hey Bob, I spent two years building, telling my wife that everything was temporary, and temporary could be anything from 2 to 10 years  I've spent the last two years reloading, shooting and hunting; my reward to myself for buying land in the country and building a house.

Vance, my 30-30 does that with cast so long as I ain't shootin' faster than 1200 fps. Soon as I pass that groups turn into patterns if the bullets don't disappear altogether. It shoots jacketed just fine though. Nice shooten there.
