Scope mounts for the handi
« on: April 04, 2005, 03:06:53 PM »
I just bought my son the H&R Ultra Varmint 223, 24" Fluted Barrel with the Choate stock (SB2-F23).  I'm not too crazy about the stock but my son likes it a bunch.  One good thing about the stock is that it has two spacers (1/2") each) that are removable to shorten the trigger pull lenght.  This is a nice feature for youth size varminteers.
My question is:  Can I take the Weaver scope base plate off and use some other brand like Leupold?  I had rather use a better quality base and ring system than Weaver.  If I did use a different scope mounting system which one would I use without having to have the barrel drilled or other modifications.  I'm looking for a cleaner set-up for this rifle.  Is there a two piece base for this rifle?
Thanks in advance.

Considering the low recoil of the .223, I wouldn't worry about spending more money and the trouble of going with anything else, but that's just me. Keep it simple, (if  you can) I allways say.
Ohhhh, I hate when that happens

I don't believe you'll find any other type bases, I've never seen em. I'm sure you could have a gunsmith drill and tap the barrel for other types, but I see nothing wrong with the weaver style and the ultra rail that comes with the UV is a great rail. You could have the weaver rail modified so it has 5 mount screws instead of 3, but I don't know if it's necessary, my .223 UV shoots sub 1/2moa just like it is.

OK, OK!! I'll keep the base rail, but what about some different rings besides the Weaver rings that look like a little strap that hooks to itself, I saw a picture of Mr. Quick's  custom job with, I believe Burris rings.  What part number for this type ring set? Mr. Quick?  Does Leupold have rings to fit this Weaver rail?
Thanks the suggestions fellas.

Michael,

I used Leupold see through mounts purchased at China-mart for $16. Fit on the rail (Jim Cary voice) like a glove (/Jim Cary voice).
They are a shade higher than I would like, but leave plenty of room for the hammer to swing, I can almost do without the hammer extension.

Good shooting,

Rick

Leupold has at least 3 types of rings that fit weaver bases, the PRW, QRW and Rifleman, but my favorite is the Burris Signature Zee rings, they provide great alignment and support for the scope without the need to lap the rings. Medium or high work great, just depends on the scope, usually the power ring or eye bell will interfere at the hammer if the rings aren't tall enough, I've used both heights, just depends on the scope and how far back it's mounted.

Yes, Leupold makes rings that will fit the Weaver type rail...That in itself should say volumes about the popularity and success of the weaver system.

My favorite rings for use with weaver rail mounts are the Burris Signature Zee rings.  Here's a link:"

Go back a page for  and scroll down for leupold rings for weaver bases.

Nothing cheap or flimsy about the sig zees.

I have three sets of regular Burris Zee rings on three different rifles.  They work great, and are very sturdy.  And they LOOK much much nicer than the cheapie China-mart rings.

Be aware that Burris has 2 types of Zee rings, the standard zee which are solid rings and the Signature Zee which have the polymer inserts. The Signature Zee are those that I recommend. The standard Zee rings require lapping to mount a scope properly.

2 of my 3 rifles with the regular Zee rings shoot less than MOA at 100 yards without lapping.  The 3rd gun is an SKS so that one doesn't count.   8)

Lapping doesn't make em shoot any better, it provides even contact between rings and scope and prevents damage to the scope due to misalignment and the notorious ring marks.

The big scope rail does look ugly I have to agree with you. Two scope blocks are easy to mount on the barrel. They dress up the Handi nicely.
See my 257 Roberts with the neat B-square rings.

The plastic inserts are not as good as claimed and let the scope move under recoil. They compress in time and get loose. Metal to metal with lock tide is still the most solid ring mount. To hone the rings is a 5min job. Most good rings need very little honing or non at all.

I have the Leupold high rings on all my Handi's and am very happy with them. Cost about $17. at Wally World. Tried mediums on my .22 Sportster, but would not clear the hammer on the scope I was using. Maybe not top of the line, but much better than the Weavers.

I have to agree with Mr. Green Jeans MHO you can not beat the
Leupod rings from Wally world for $16 or $17. I have never lapped
a set rings in my life, and mounted a lot of scopes! Ido not like Weaver
rings and bases (rails) just my thoughts. Marv.

I have mentioned my preference for rings for my Handi's before and it has not changed. The Millet Angle Loc's work great for me. All Metal and they allow for easy adjustment if needed. I can only go by what has worked, and worked well, for me!!....<><....

Michael,
I know you requested suggestions NOT requiring drilling and mounting, and I think the other members covered your question well. BUT, several years ago I had the itch to mount a scope using Leupold STD rings. Best I came up with required using a T/C Contender base. It was mounted using the rear most mounting screw plus two new drilled and tapped screws. The three screws held up to several hundred rounds of heavy 45-70 rounds and never came loose. Also, keep in mind that the NEF supplied mount uses only three screws. The shape of the base was close enough, but if I was to do it again I think I'd fill under the base with JB weld. Sure looked nice.

You can fine a clean looking mount from Conetrol, but it is very expensive. Also you can get a steel weaver type base from Virgin Valley and Control and use any number of nice looking rings; Leupold has got some tactical rings that are over $200.00. I decided to save myself the money and went with the Burris Z rings over the base that came with the gun. The Weaver base is not nearly as distracting with nice looking rings on top of it.

Thanks Michael H for starting this thread.  Somehow, I missed this when the discussion began.  It popped right out at me a 3:30 this morning when I couldn't sleep and came to see what was goin' on.  I need to know this stuff, as I have a new 243 coming and don't know the first thing about scopes.  Thanks to all you guys who have contributed.  I saved all the links and have some studying to do.

I have a .45-70, do not really want a scope, but the old eyes need either a scope or receiver sight, I put a Weaver rail on, got a shotgun 2.5x scope with 6" eye relief, cut a new slot in the rail, easy with aluminum, and mounted the scope far enough foreward to not need a hammer extension.
Works well.

If you use an H&R factory scope rail, either the standard 5" rail or the Ultra rail which is 6" long and protrudes out over the chamber area an addittional inch (which allows for a longer mounting area and mounting a scope further forward), you will immediately be struck by why they are preferred over the Weaver rail. There are many more slots precut in the rail other than the 2 on the Weaver rail. This allows for much more latitude in ring and scope placement. I agree it is fairly easy to cut a new slot and have had to do so myself. I do have ONE Weaver rail I purchased which left a lot to be desired regarding ring placement. Try the factory rail, it's much better than the Weaver for real world purposes. I think you will come to like and prefer it....<><....
