Swithing between scoped barrels?
« on: April 05, 2005, 12:16:53 AM »
Does it take several shots to re-index the scope when you change back and forth between barrels that have scopes mounted on them?  I know from reading here that it makes a difference if you don't tighten the forend screw the same each time.   Other than that, do you have to worry about being on target if you had it scoped in before you removed it?  Or, is it just better to get it where you want it and then not remove it from that receiver?  Thanks

I don't think it makes any difference that you can tell,
True you need to tighten fore arm screw the same, maybe
 Just my 2 cents Marv.

Since the scopes are affixed to the barrels there should be very little change in point of impact (POI) unless the scoped barrel is dropped or banged hard while it is off the receiver.   For large game hunting calibers I would not be concerned about checking the POI after switching barrels.  For long range small varmints or precision paper punching I would fire a few shots for verification before hunting or shooting for scores.  As Marv mentioned fore-arm screw tension is probably the key factor. Some guys have bought torgue screw drivers so that they can dial in the same screw tension every time they reinstall the forearm.

Switching between barrels

Thanks, guys.  I wondered about that because may send my rifle receiver in to NEF for a USH 20ga barrel.  Not sure at this time, if money allows I may just purchase the whole slug gun.  At any rate, the USH and the 243 would both have scopes if I opt for just the barrel fitting.

By the time you pay fitting charges plus shipping and handling both ways to have just a barrel fit to your receiver you could probably find yourself a clean 2nd hand USH. There is plenty of time before next falls deer season, I would start searching the gun & pawn shop's used gun racks. Put the word out to your shooting buddies that you are looking.  Guns are like cars, you can save a bundle buying used and if you have to sell you don't loose as much.
