Rem 1100 Choke Question
« on: April 05, 2005, 03:00:22 AM »
Hello all

I have a Rem 1100 3" magnum with a full choke that measures 0.712 inches.

The firearm was manufactured in 1973, but I've no idea if this is the original barrel.

My question is, am I reading the  Rem Chokes Chart correctly and my choke falls in to the Modified range?

If so, do I need to do anything to the choke before I can shoot steel through it?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Chris

You should find out what your choke constriction is before shooting steel. Although the Remington barrel is probably sturdy enough to stand up to steel shot without "ring buldging" (and I said "probably"), there is little need for a full choke constriction (calibrated for lead) when shooting steel. As a general rule, steel will pattern full with a modified (calibrated for lead) choke constriction, and over constricting will damage the pattern and possibly the barrel....measure your bore, measure your choke, and determine the difference in those diameters; this will give you your choke constriction.

There's little more to add.  While the 'normal' 12 gauge bore is .729 it may well be much smaller espcially in some european shotguns and a bunch larger in bores that have been back bored or over bored.. as with some of the modern Brownings..  The difference is what determines the choke..

The Remington Chokes that I have are either unmarked (lead only) or marked "STEEL".
