Tips on buying first Handi
« on: April 06, 2005, 08:38:55 AM »
I recently purchased a pretty beat up 30-30 Handi for use in my family's slaughterhouse.  It looks like a youth model due to the stock size and small barrel.  I had so much fun shooting this thing before putting it to use, I am planning on getting one for myself.  That 30-30 is going to have some rough duty and I wouldn't be able to build upon it since it is used so frequently on large bulls.

There seem to be so many models of the Handi, including heavy varmint barrels, cowboy type barrels, shotgun, etc.  I would like to purchase one that would allow me to have it fitted to most of the barrels and chamberings offered, possibly also shooting shotgun.  I really like that 38-55 from the pictures that I have seen.

Please let me know what would be the best base model for me to start on would be.  I want to be sure to order the right model to build on.  I am sure I will get addicted to judging by the amount of Encore and Contender barrels that I have. :D

Thanks for any help

Any of the new SB-2 centerfires are good to build upon...and it will all depend on what your looking to start off with. The 38-55 is a good one...but it doesn't come with a montecarlo stock suitable for scopes...but if that's ok...then I say go for it and enjoy the heck out of it...also the Buff Clasic 45-70...both of them excellent guns...

The .30-30 would be a good start, They are very versital, But a hotter round such as a .270, .308, or .30-06 would ensure you have a receiver capable of handleing all the other barrel changes.

Thease things are addictive be prepared to buy more and welcome to the club. :D
