Need a handgun scope? What to get and where?
« on: April 06, 2005, 09:13:24 AM »
I am thinking about getting a good quality, high magnification handgun scope.  Have been looking at the Burris 3-12, but where can I get the best price?  I don't particularly care if used or new (although new is a little pricey).  Does Ed's carry used/new scopes?

What other brands are good?  T/C?  etc.

I think I'd like the burris for working up loads (12x).

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would say put an add in the classified section and see if you can get one there. If  you want a new on look at one of the site sponsors here at Graybeard.  :D

bknight,

I just got one of those 3x-12x Burris Handgun 'scopes from Midsouth this week.  I really don't know if they are the cheapest, but they are always very competative.  That is my 3rd 3x-12x Burris 'scope and I bought them all from Midsouth Shooter Supply Company.  I have them all mounted on T/C Contenders using Redfield 3-ring mounting systems.  I really like them, although the only problem is the fact that the eye relief could be a bit farther on the higher powers.  Good-luck...BCB

Natchez Shooters Supplies had the 3-12 Burris on sale for 3 bills plus shipping through the end of March.i have a 3-9 Burris and have been thinking about another one too.maybe a new 3-12 Burris or a used 3-9 like i have if i can find one.they are very nice scopes.

as far a Eds Contenders goes i would look some place else if i were you.i hear from others he gives good deals on  his barrels but i found as good of pricing on the last two barrels i bought here  local. his web site is a joke and his personality isnt that good on the phone to say the least.

im sure if you look around some a good deal can be had on that scope.the Burris scopes are very nice

Thank you for your advice and input.  I am definitely leaning toward the Burris.

For an alternative, does anyone use a scope other than the Burris that they really like for the cost.  I know you get what you pay for, but what about something in the $125-250 range.

Thanks.

love the 3x12 burris.....got 6 of em

as a cheaper option(around $150)......i'm liking the 2x6 bushnell trophy scope pretty dang good so far. it does have a different type eye relief as you turn up the power. it doesn't shorten as much as the burris, but you can shorten it up by adjusting the rear ocular lens(screwing it out). it is now more handy for my personal shooting stance/style.

my 3 picks for scopes are a 3x12 burris, 2x7 burris, and the 2x6 bushnell trophy, depending on money available at the time and it's intended use.

leupold 2.5x8's are great of course, but kinnda above what i usually want to spend.

I've got mine from Bear Basin and have purchased from SWFA too.  They usually have the best prices and are quite reliable.

I posted a WTB for a Burris 3x12 in the classifieds and was informed of the Natchez deal.  My $312 ballistic plex/ matte 3x12 arrived this past Tuesday and  I plan to install it on a Super14 .222 tonight.  Looks like a well made scope.

First, I'd like to thank everyone for their responses.  I appreciate everyone's input.  It's all very helpful.

In doing a little research, I can get the burris 3-12 bplex for $311 plus s&h or the bushnell 3200 2-6 for $234.  I guess these are the choices I'm trying to decide between.

I do have a question about the eye relief, though.  It seems that according to product info I've read that the burris has a variable eye relief of 19-10" based on the power of the scope.  The bushnell has a constant eye relief of 20".  Which type of eye relief do you prefer in a handgun scope?  I recently purchased a leupold riflescope and the variable eye relief on it really bugs me (but that's in a riflescope).

Do you have any preferences on these two scopes in regard to eye relief?

Thanks again.

I have the bushnell trophy 2x6, use it on my rimfires.  This is an excellent scope for the money.  Eye relief seems pretty constant across the powers.

I bought the Burris 3x12 knowing the eye relief would shorten up quite a bit at 12x.  I got it for the specific application of load development off the bench on light recoiling rounds,  & it may also go out for chucks on occasion.

DropTheHammer,

You are going to love the Burris 3-12x on your 14" .222.  This is the same rig that I use for ground hogs, and it is quite deadly.  The 12x magnification is really sweet for those long shots, just make sure that you have a really, really sturdy rest.  12 power is awfully hard to hold freehand.

Enjoy the scope...you'll never regret getting it.
How'd you like a peek at my 14-incher? (Contender, that is)
