my buddy has a 45 70 marlin and he is looking to find a good bullet for it.
see my next post down. i have re-evaluated what i was thinking.

I don't mind sending sample bullets, but your buddy can flat buy Lee 459-405-HB cheaper than two way shipping on a bullet swap and we have yet to hear from anyone who was not satisfied with that bullet at Level One loads.

you know, you have a point. once a guy starts piddling with shipping, he would be better off just buying the mold.
i think i will change my request from swapping bullets to advise on which bullet should work well in his gun. i think his major concern is that he tried some copper bullets that wouldnt fit in his gun. i dont know too many details, but i want to say it was a 400 some grain bullet that was kind of spire pointed (dont ask me, that is how he described it :oops:).
i know it is a 45 70 marlin lever, not a guide gun. so i guess now i am asking for advise on which mold he should get- we have one vote for the Lee 459-405-HB. any body else have some expereince on the subject?

I recommend the RCBS 405gr. gaschecked flatpoint. It feeds correctly in the Marlin, is super accurate, can be driven as fast as you can stand, and is a very good quality mould.

Evening.
Guess I was sleeping when this was posted first time.
I use the Lee 405 flat base mould. I have had excellent results out to 100 yards. I also have a Marlin lever gun.
Am working on a 200 yard group but the weather won't settle down enough in the AM for me to shoot. I am running the bullet at 1,300 and change. Plain wheelweights, water cooled.

Nobade is correct. It's probably the best all round bullet for the Govt.

I'd shy clear of the hollow base bullet on typical smokeless loads in the Marlin. The hollow base is designed to bump up to fill the barrel on black powder rifles of varying barrel diameter. For the Marlin or other rifles made with modern machining, I'd go with a flat based bullet. Lyman, Lee, RCBS and others make very good moulds for the 45-70. To say one is better than another is a hard call, too many variables and too many rifles to shoot them out of.

now doubt about it creaker and nobade hit it right on the head the rcbs 405 is the best 4570 bullet out there and the 500 grain rcbs is right behind it.

Here's the RCBS 45-500-FN Lloyd speaks of. It's a big ole bullet.

in my testing it edged out the 405 by just a smidge in accuracy in my two 4570s and ive shot deer with both cast soft and they hit like the hammer of thor!!!!
