.243 Ultra Varmint Range Report
« on: April 06, 2005, 03:34:06 PM »
Spent some time at the range again today, shot the .243 Ultra Varmint at 100yds, tried Winchester and Remington 80gr PSP, Federal 85gr Sierra Gameking BTHP(old and new issue), Federal 100gr Nosler Partition moly and Federal Classic 100gr SP....all but the Nosler Partitions and the Classics shot approx 1½" 3 shot groups, the Noslers shot into a 1" group and the Classic 100gr shot into less than 1/2" at 100yds.

Sweet, you have to love it when things go so well. It gives me hope that when I get my P.O.S.243 back from NEF it will shoot like that. with groups like that you dont need to look for a good handload but if you do please post it.

I may just have to do that, the Federal Classic ammo is no longer made under that name, the new Power-Shok 100gr SP ammo may be the same, but I don't know that for sure, I'll have to pick a box up to see.

I have to admit that I may have corrupted another shooter today, he'd never actually looked at a handi before, said he handled an Encore once and wasn't impressed with the stock design, but he had always been interested in the simple but functional design of the handis. I let him handle mine, take a couple shots, the look on his face after pulling the trigger on an empty case was priceless!! He said none of his other rifles had as good a trigger on them, he was truly amazed. I told him about a new synthetic stocked .243 Handi that had been on sale at BiMart for $170, and he said he had to leave....immediately!!!

With groups like that it would be easy to corrupt the most die-hard bolt action gun nut

I knew those rifles would shoot...

$170 is a heck of a buy. Especially for a gun that is so versatile. It can be used for crows, squirrels, pdogs, pigeons, and even big game like deer. Gotta love NEF. You said it has a great trigger. Where did you get it done?

Thanks Mitchell!

6-24x42, On that frame, I had the trigger done by H&R when I sent it in for a couple barrels, but I've been doing my own triggers since then. An H&R trigger job will be right around 3lbs or a little less, mine are between 2lbs3oz and 2lb6oz with just a little honing using the Raynor trigger hone sticky in the H&R Misc and Collectible forum and Perklo's instructions.

Thanks for the info. I had been thinking about getting mine done by H&R because I heard it was free and because I have no money to replace it if I screw it up which isn't a far fetched idea.

All the ammo shot with deer hunting accuracy, but this is my long range coyote gun, so I want the best accuracy I can get, and so far, the 100gr Federal SP ammo has the job, although I would like a lighter bullet for a flatter trajectory. I don't plan on reloading for this caliber, so if the 58gr Vmax is not loaded in a factory round, I can't use it.

I'm told by Donaldo, IIRC, that you can use a wooden dowel for the slave pin, I haven't done it, but someone has. I used a ceramic stone from a Lansky knife sharpening kit to do the honing, it doesn't take much, just polish the contact surfaces as indicated in the instructions. Also, Fred M has some instructions that help in the reassembly, you almost need 3 hands normally, his tips will help. And don't be too worried about ruining the parts, unless you loose something, it's not likely, and IIRC, the hammer and trigger cost less that $20 total to order from Brownell's.

I use four round tooth picks for my slave pins together they fit just tight enuff in the holes.

I, too, like the .243 caliber for yote hunting. I like the selection of bullets from Nosler and Sierra. I have found that Varget and H-380 have been my best powders after many hours of testing over the last several years.

Good shooting quick ... I like those kind of patterns in a group.

Hornady loads the 58gr V-Max moly in .243 in the Varmit Express line.  I got mine at Sportsman's Warehouse.
