May I make a confession here?
« on: April 07, 2005, 09:32:33 AM »
last Friday I sent one of my receivers to The Factory for 3 new barrels.

That's not the confession.

Later in the day my best friend called and asked if I wanted to go to the Sportsman's Warehouse. Being my best friend and all I couldn't resist.

I spent the first 15 minutes wandering aimlessly through the aisles, pretending I had no interest in the sizable gun selection in the rear of the store.

Soon the gun racks came into view. Shotguns first, over-unders, autos, singles. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the singles but I marched steadfastly forward. The large selection of handguns was easily passed by. One rack of long guns. Second and third rack of long guns.

Then there it was. In the fourth rack of rifles, the designated H&R section, I spy a suspiciously long barrel. Hmm, no globe like the BC. Must be a 25/06. I wait patiently for the clerk to head my way.

Is that a 25/06 in that rack? I ask. No, we don't have any of those he replied. Hmmm, may I see it anyways I reply? As he hands it over, action open, price tag dangling, barrel and laminated stock gleaming I realize I need this rifle. Sure enough, 25/06 Ultra, just as I suspected!

A quick (30 second) inspection and I informed the clerk I would like to put this rifle on layaway. His confusion aside, I put the rifle on layaway.

To really ruin his day I asked if he would notify me when a .204 or a .500 ended up in his store. He looked at me smugly and announced that H&R/NEF would never have THOSE calibers available. To which I got my 2005 catlog from my truck and showed hm the appropriate entries.... :-D

Yes, I am a Handi-Holic. I will ignore any and all suggestions of a twelve step program.

Piney, sorry to say, I am well past the 12 barrel program.

I guess it only gets worse from here...... :D

The 10 gauge is next to go to the factory. It will be fitted with a 24" barrel w/choke tube.

After that the 22LR Sporty will be sent for it's companion barrels in 22mag and 17 Hummer.

I am SOOOOO addicted.

I think what is really important here is that you helped to educate a store clerk that obviously didn't know what he was talking about. I am not bashing this person but it amazes me at times how much knowledge they have until they say something. Had he said that NEF would never have Handi's in .204 or .500 to someone else that didn't know any better, they could have been steered toward another purchase.

Sorry, I just had to get that off of my chest.

Nixter, there's not a thing wrong with you, I'd be proud to stand in line with you at the gun counter anytime......as long as I was in front of you!!!! :-D  A Sportsmans Warehouse clerk told me that they didn't carry the Buffalo Classic, so I bought one elsewhere. The next time I was there, they had one in the rack, and what really ticked me off was the price was $20 less than what I paid!!

Most folks behind the counter at places like that are there just for a low paying job until something better comes along. The guys that work at the little shops don't get paid any better but are passionate about guns and care about knowing about them.At least enough to read the catalog or check before they tell you they can't get it.
