Old H&R .30-30

I saw one at a local gun shop complete with a Tasco 4X scope.  I believe it was a Mod 158.  When the barrel is opened there is noticable side to side play at the hinge pin.  Not what I would consider excessive (uneducated opinion) but definitly noticable.  When shut, the lock-up is firm with no play at all.  The gun is in decent condition with normal wear. I don't see me buying because I believe it is priced to high ($230.00), but I became curious as to how the play could be repaired.

Does anyone know or have any idea's?

If the lockup is tight and the headspace is within spec, the forend spacer is probably worn and a shim needs to be placed between the forend and the spacer, then reinstalling the spacer to the forend. I've been experimenting with aluminum tape that measures .004" thick, it works well to tighten the action when open and to tighten groups on some rifles, but too tight(too much shimming) causes groups to string.

That is priced rather high for a Topper...with or without the scope...a more realistic price would be closer to the $100 mark than above the $200 mark...

Quickdtoo:  I didn't look to see if the forend spacer was worn.  Understanding that the tape decreases the space caused by wear, do you think using something like acra-glass would be a viable solution?

MAC11700:  I couldn't agree more.  I checked and saw that new in the box only brings around $150.00.  The shop is a gun/pawn shop.  They also sell some new guns, but it obvious they are not "gun guys".  I have bought from there in the past and they are usually are willing to deal, but I didn't even try to discuss what the real value of that gun is.  Really can't see him dropping down to $100.00.  Guess it doesn't hurt to ask, though.

I didn't mean @ $100 for it...I doubt they would go that low...but rather under $150...and closer to the $100 mark...I had one several years ago...and did extreamly well with mine...I was going thru some of my old data sheets I got with mine...looking at the loads and velocities I got from  it...and my best loads were all sub 1/2" moa...with the 125 grain and 130 grain bullets...and IMR 3031 powder...so they made some good ones back then too

I'm sure bedding material would work, but the nice thing about the aluminum shim is it doesn't show and the amount of shim thickness can be controlled precisely, bedding material would need to be applied, then sanded down to the right thickness. Keeping the end of the forend square would also be tricky.

Mac11700:  Apologies, for my poor grammer.  I understood what you meant, but I'm not sure I would pay near $150.00 give or take for this particular gun.  But, you guys are much more knowledgable about these guns than I.

Quickdtoo:   Agreed.  Bedding compound would require more work.
