rotating to different locations?
« on: April 08, 2005, 12:08:45 PM »
I found 3 or 4 good beaver spots today, and they are all in different locations.

Due to driving/checking time and the limited number of traps I have, I can't really set them all at once. When is a good time to rotate my traps or move to the next location?

Just after the catch drops off?

Plus a couple of the spots are on the same river, so should I wait a week or so before coming back to the same river?

Thanks!!

There will be a lot of movement going on .If I set up on rivers or creeks,I would leave the sets in. Soon you will have all kinds of movement and travelers. On ponds I set several traps ,so I may pull after 2 or 3 days.I gang set most times,so the bulk of the pond beaver are taken the first night or 2.
I treat big lakes much the same as rivers,my traps may be out for the duration. Here again there is all kinds of beaver movement.

On a river or any type of integrated water system I will leave the trap in as long as I am driving by or near the location.

A small pond I try to take the bigger beaver and get out.  I usually have a pretty good feel of what type/age groups of beaver are in my trapping areas as I trap basically the same locations year to year.

If traps and time would be an important consideration for me I would rotate as soon as the catch drops off and move to a fresh area.  When you have hit all the areas and season is still open and the beaver are still good I wouldnt hesitate to move back to the rivers as you should pick up a couple of travelers.
