New to board and glad to have found it

I found this site through a post in Milsurp After Hours.  What a lucky find.  I thought I was one of the few numbnutzes around who was crazy about H&R/NEF single-shots.

My first H&R I got in 1966 and still have it.  I was aware of accessory barrels when I first got it, but for many years thought I would "wait a while" before I got any.  Next thing I knew, H&R was gone.  When I bought my first NEF guns, I didn't wait to get accessory rifle and shotgun barrels.  I have a bunch of shotguns and several rifles.  Many people think of these single-shots as cheap clunkers, but I get a lot of enjoyment out of them.  They are inexpensive, reliable, simple, accurate, and they will probably be the last guns they take away from us.  I don't know what else you can ask of a gun.

My .45-70 is just the crummy, basic model but will put all the shots through the center of the target with all holes touching.   I bought accessory barrels for this in .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum figuring if they take our revolvers away, I can still fire those cartridges through these barrels.  I also have a .30-30 rifle and a sort-of fancy .308 made for the Rocky Mountain Elk blah-blah, which someone got tired of and dumped in a gunshop.  I got a bargain on that one.

If you are reloading centerfire rounds to shoot in one of these rigs, use small base dies.  If you don't, once in a while you could stick an empty in the chamber that the extractor won't pull out.

Welcome ....

I am not too new to Graybeard Outdoors but I am new to this section on NEF guns. This is a great group of guys who I have found to take as much pride or more in their NEF's than others do in the bigger dollar bolt actions, etc. These guys are serious about helping others get the most out of their rifles.

I bought a SB RCBS die set in .223 in January and have been using it for my NEF rifle reloads. So far, I have not had any stuck cases except when I use the Hornady 55gr Vmax flatbase bullet. Everyone one of these stick and they are not hot loads. I have used anywhere from 20.9 gr of IMR 4198 to 22.0 gr. I have a 250 count box of these I thought would shoot great in my new Savage 10 FP but they don't compared to the accuracy I am getting out of my Nosler BT 55 gr. These IMR 4198 loads are grouping great in my NEF but I just need to clean and polish up my chamber more tonight before I shoot again tomorrow.

Welcome aboard! :D  It's nice to see another Washingtonian on the board, I'm in Vancouver, have a bunch of H&R/NEF rifles, and am always looking for more......as a true Handi-holic would!!! I've only been shooting the rifles for a year, but cut my teeth on an old H&R 12ga shotgun as a boy, was the first centerfire firearm I shot. Right now including the 30-06 UltraComp that was just shipped from H&R, I have 16 rifles, 3 rimfires and 2 shotguns and still want a stainless .22-250!!!

Check out the FAQ sticky at the top of this forum list, lots of good info there for all to absorb...enjoy!

I am new here too. I found this through another site. I started out with an old stevens single shot 12 Ga. I have been into the NEF rifles for quite a few years. My first was a H&R 30-30 which I finally wore out. I have a lot of shooting to do now that the weather is improving.

Welcome aboard, glad you made it over here!  :D Wore out an H&R .30-30!!! My goodness, what did you do to wear it out??? The 12gr H&R that I grew up with still shoots good, my Dad took a turkey with in in '96. I had to shim the pivot 30yrs ago, but it's still working good!!

I bought the old 30-30 used. It was really loose. It was to old for NEF to work on or so they said. I sold it to a gunsmith friend who said he could fix it up. I shot pretty good but it spooked me a little that it seemed to have quite a bit of back and fourth play in it.

One other note that maybe you can help with. I added a signature to my profile but it does not seem to work.

Howdy Doo & Welcome :D

This is indeed a great place to hang out ...were kinda proud of our Handi's here...even those who only have a couple of them...and we will defend them just a vigorously as anyother type firearm...because they are the best single shot going for the money spent...we have a-lot of great guys here and just about anything you'll need to know about them...is usually just a question away...it sounds like you've been a Handi-holic for some time...without having a support group to go a-long with your addiction...don't worry...your in good company now...  :)

Once you have created your signature you can check the Add Signature box on the posting form to add your signature. You can also add a signature by default to all your posts by checking the appropriate radio box in your profile. You can still prevent a signature being added to individual posts by un-checking the add signature box on the posting form.

Shimming the pivot is easily done, I use pop can aluminum for a temp shim to determine how thick of a shim I need to tighten the barrel fit, then use an inexpensive automotive feeler guage blade of the correct thickness epoxied in place with JB weld in the barrel pivot surface to make a permanent shim. Instructions for barrel fitting are in the FAQ sticky....

Welcome aboard Dakota Man. This forum has inspired me to shoot my Handis more often, and to even buy some more. I had a .44 Mag for many years before I discovered this forum. Now I have a .17 Sportster, and that 44 is now a .223. I also have a .243 heavy barrel Ultra I like very much. I can't believe how well it shoots.

Uh...now all you have to do is buy one Handi a month (like the rest of us do)  or more  and shoot the crap out of them.  :D
Ohhhh, I hate when that happens
