How about some group sizes from the .22LR Handi's
« on: April 08, 2005, 03:17:47 PM »
Just curious if any of you have been getting some really good groups at 50 yards (or whatever range you shoot at).

I've been thinking about an inexpensive Silhoutte rifle for my son, maybe a Handi.

Tell me what kinda groups you get.  Got any photos?  I'd like to see 'em.

What ammo did you shoot.

What sights, glass did ya use.

Hope this hasn't been beat to death before - I'm a little new to this site.  If ya'll went over this not long ago - point me to it, I'll leave you alone.

Thanks, Bill

Bill, just an FYI, the rimfire NEF rifles are called Sportsters....can't help ya on the 22Lr, I only own the 17hmr, 17M2 and 22 mag Sportsters, but FWIW, they are all good shooters, I would expect the 22Lr to be good, also. 17M2 Sportster below....

I have not had my 22lr long time but 1.5" + @ 50yrd.  bulk amo from walmart
With a 4x scope.

I just kill pop cans and beer bottles a the garbage dump, not tested much amo yet. I like the gun so far seems to be a good gun for the money

Sportster Groups

My best group so far with my new Sportster 22M at 50 yards is 5/8 inch outside to outside.  I shot it today using 40 gr. PMC Predator’s.  I went to the range and sighted in at 50 yards using 40 gr. Winchesters, my groups were about 1 inch with them.  Then, I tried the Predators and they seemed to group about 1 inch to but the POI was about 1 ½ inch low with the zero set for the Winchesters.  About midway through the box of Predators I had a 3 shot cloverleaf going.  I took another shot and it went about a ¼ inch to the right of the cloverleaf.  I thought about quitting while I was ahead but took another shot and blew it.  The last shot in the 5 shot group went high of the group I had going by about 1 inch.

By the way, my Sportster is new and not even broke in yet.  It has a Mueller 3-9 X 40 IGR mounted on top with Signature Zees.  I am still doing a break in procedure with it by cleaning the barrel with a patch after every 10 shots.  I haven’t done the O-ring trick yet but it does have the trigger lightened by the factory.  The trigger is a little better than it was before but it’s still not that great.  I expect that this gun will shoot a lot better after it’s broke in.

I was shooting pretty good today in general since I got a 4 hole cloverleaf with my Savage .17 HMR.  Again, I blew the group on the last round.

Haven't had my Sportster .22 LR too long, but really like it. Have less than 200 rounds through it and all have been the Federal bulk pak from Wal-Mart except for a few Remingotn shorts. Had my best group today and it was the first group I shot. 5 shots in 5/8" or so. Didn't have any more nearly that good, some at about 1". Have the target in the back of my truck and will try to post picture tomorrow to verify. Did all shooting at 50 yards. I have a Bushnell 4 x 12 - 40 AO on mine and am really pleased with it. Great rifles for the money.

Here's the group from the previous post. Turns out to be 11/16" center to center. This was with the Federal Bulk Pak.

Great shooting!  Good benches don't get much simpler than this one....it costs less than $40 to build and it's real solid, yet light....

The groups out of my .22lr sporster have be disappointing. I've shot just about everything and haven't been able to do better than 2" at 50 yards.

i'm sending the rifle back because I've been getting a lot of misfires with the 17hmr barrel. Maybe the light firing pin hits are part of the .22 lr inaccuracy issue.
