I am considering buying a Model 88 in 308 Winchester. The rifle is very clean. I have always liked this "non-traditional" lever gun. Does anyone own one of these vintage Winchesters? How does it shoot?

I own a pre 64, I love it.  It groups consittantly 1" @ 100 yrds, hasn't jammed in the 15 years that i've hunted with it, and has accounted for one hell of a lot of deer, moose, and bear.

The one I'm looking at isn't a pre '64, but it is a very nice rifle. It fits me perfectly and points like a wand.

I've got one and love mine.  The trigger is a little rough and stiff but you can get used to it.  Mine was a post '64 .243 but now has a 23" Douglas barrel in 7mm-08.

It sounds like you have a really sweet hunting rifle! I've just got to get the one I've been looking at. I like it more every time I pick it up in the gun shop. 8)

Well, I couldn't stand it any more. Today I bought the Model 88 at my local gun shop. I've wiped all the "stranger prints" off her. If she shoots as good as she looks, I'll be very happy. I can't wait to get on the range! 8)

I also have an old (1956) model 88 in .308 and love it.  1" groups all day, and it isn't fussy about what I feed it.  Mine has no collectors value any more, after I had a Black-T finish put on 12 years ago.  But that sure helped lighten up the trigger pull, though it still feels like a sponge.

I suggest you get or make a snap cap if you are going to be doing much dry firing.  Firing pins are very hard to come by.  I speak from personal experience...

Winterhawk,

Thanks for the advise about the firing pin. I don't want to damage this rifle or hunt hard to find parts. I took her to the loacl range the other day. It is only 50 yards, and I shot some 180 grain factory ammo from a sitting position. 5 shots went into a group smaller than a half dollar with the issue iron sights. The trigger isn't bolt gun quality, but it is manageable. I can't wait to scope her up and work up a good 150-165 grain handload. This is going to be a nice hunting rifle! :grin:
