COAL in 22-250 using V-Max
« on: April 09, 2005, 12:41:20 PM »
Hey all,

I'm looking for some advice on the cartridge length for my 22-250 NEF. I'm working a load up for 50gr V-Max using an H380 charge of 38.5.

The plastic tip creates an overly short, IMHO, cartridge when seated to the manuals max of 2.350. The bullet is seated down to near the ogive at 2.350.
The lands appear to be out at 2.44 or there abouts.

I've got a few rounds loaded to 2.385 to take to the range tomorrow. I just wondered what others were using.

Good shooting,

Rick

My book shows 2.310. That should be a good starting point. In the Handi you may be able to go a bit longer.
shot placement is everything.

218 Bee.
In a Handi your are not restricted by a magazine length. You can load the 50gr V-max a 1/4" into the neck for a OAL of 2.462". this will give you a good grip on the bullet and reduce the pressure a wee bit. The H380 is a very good powder for the 22-250, with a near full case you get a nice pressure that the handi will like, but start your load 10% below the recommended loads by Hodgdon.

Thanks guys,

Mag primers with the H380 helped somewhat. I'm still struggling to group below an inch with my handloads.

Yesterdays best was 39gr. H380 under a 50gr. V-Max  with LR mag primer COAL = 2.385, grouping at 1" at 100yds.

There's a shooter in her, I've just got to bring it out.

Try the 63 grain Sierra semi-Spitzer. It shot well for a heavier bullet in the NEF 223
shot placement is everything.
