Author Topic: cylinder lock-up problem (Read 651 times)

I have a Ruger bisley .45LC vaquero 5.5'' barrel. When I shoot the cylinder will lock-up when I try to cock it. When this happens, I turn the cylinder with my hand while cocking it. I have had this gun for less than a month and have put about 150 rounds thur it with 50 rounds factory and the rest my reloads. I haven't loaded any hot loads for this gun around 750 to 850fps. I shot today and when I got home I found a primer was sticking out just alittle and was rubbing the face near the firing pin while I turned the cylinder by hand. I don't think this is the real problem but I will keep a eye out for that. Does anyone have any ideas about this?

I had a similer problem with my Vaquero. The cylender would hang up and not cycle to the next round. I found that my base pin was poping out a bit on every shot. Had to send it to Ruger and they fixed it!

primmer dept can definatley do it and can be dangerous if there sticking out also they can go off when recoiling agianst the recoil shield. The advancement pawl can also cause it. I had one that was freewheeled and wasnt cut just right and would lock up.

I had the exact same problem. I switched from CCI primers to Winchesters and the problem went away. I haven't had the problem since.

Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking the base pin may be my problem also. The base pin has alittle play in it. I'll watch for that when I shoot next.
I'm using Winchester primers also.

Ruger was great! Thay payed shipping both ways and it took about 3 weeks to get my gun back.

It is very important that your primers be seated somewhat below the case head. I am sure that your press will have an adjustment for this. If they are protruding, you can have failure to fire requiring two strikes to fire as well as the situation that you have described. It is potentially dangerous as well.
