newbie and extrex legend having startup difficulties
« on: April 10, 2005, 01:55:27 PM »
Hello to all,

Please I am in desperate need of some help! Yesterday (saturday I purchased a new garmin extrex legend. I tried the quick start and the gps could not find satellites.
I went through the manual and "new location" setup, still it just searches for satellites.(initially the map it showed was for taiwan.)
I am set on the "normal" setting
the gps is on, I have tried it with the waas enabled and disabled
I set the map manually for where I am using the "new location" feature
I am out in the open with a clear view of the sky.
I am leaving it outside for long periods of time (up to an hour) for it to locate itself

Please if any of you have any information, any thing that I may have overlooked- please give me some assistance, I can't think that I bought a new gps and it is faulty, and I'm completly new to the game.
  Thanks much, rvtrav

I've had the etrex legend for a few years......sounds like your doing your part........what version of firmware is on your legend?  Do you have a cable for connecting to a computer to upgrade the firmware?

Does the legend give you a message like wait tracking satellites?

From the main menu, push the mouse to the left and you shoud see a dropdown for use with GPS off.....try changing GPS off and on.......

You might have to call Garmin.........

Let us know how you come out.........

Thankyou much for the reply Victorcharlie,

I've spent most of the afternoon outside trying various methods.
Yes I do have a chord for connecting to the computer, I may wait to hear from garmin before connecting up and downloading anything new.
I should have the latest firmware that garmin has out. I have sent off an E-mail to Garmin with all the information that I could about the problem.
Hopefully I will get a response soon.
I have tried almost everything,I've attempted turning on and off the gps to reset to a new location. Using both the map and the automatic to set  to a new location, and pulling out the batteries and attempting a "reset" as well, in hopes that it will finally operate. It does start out in the right location it just can't finish tracking satellites and begin to navigate.
It does give a message that it is tracking satellites, it just never moves beyond that point.
So far thats all I've been able to accomplish.

Thanks again Victorcharlie, I'll try it all again tommorrow

You should just give them a call. You probably have a defective unit.

Thanks to both of you for the response.

To end the story I called Garmin this morning from work. They gave me a couple of new tricks to try, a complete reset and such-no dice.

Garmin said either send it to them or take it to the point of purchase, it must be faulty.
Anyway I ended up taking the legend back to the store where I bought it from. No offense to Garmin, they were great to deal with, but I ended up exchanging for a magellan sportrac gold. My niehbor has one and I liked the graphics better.
Fired it up in the parking lot and had signal within seconds, I tested it out on the way home and it works like a charm.

Thanks again guys, I really just thought that it had to be me, I'd have kept banging my head against the wall...

Garmin is a good company and makes a good product. If you are in the market for another GPS or an upgrade, don't let this example sway your oppinion of Garmin. Every manufacturer has a lemon from time to time that slips through QA and QC controls.

Sounds like my kind of luck. If there's one bad unit in a batch of 1000, I'll get it. Too bad about your experience, Garmin is a great product.
