i think i have totaly sissified myself. the last deer rifle i have shot was me 7mm-08 and that was back in deer season(november) all i have been shooting is the 22 hornet and the 204 ruger (no recoil). well  this afternoon i took the 30-06 out to shoot some target loads i had from this time last year.well after shooting 20 of those  :biggun: my shoulder is very very red! i think i'm going to go back to rimfires tomorrow.

i also sadly learned today that my scars from my burns will not tan like the rest of my body :(  . its really nice and red right now and is pretty darn hot i got a good burn going.
curiosity killed the cat , but i was lead suspect for a while

Years ago I had my 30-06 re-barreled to a 25-06....my only complaint is that I waited so long to do so.

When I go shooting, I like to send a few bullets down the tube. The 'ol 30-06 sure takes the fun out of it.

I'll never forget the first time I took my .270 Win Savage model 110 to the range. I thought that thing would beat me to death. But I did get used to it. It doesn't bother me anymore.

My 9 year old son LIKES my 16 gage shotgun with palstic stocks and lighter than a feather. He just got used to it.
Ohhhh, I hate when that happens

That's why they made the Ultra Comp barrels...they work exceptionally well in this regards...

I feel your pain.  I went to the range last week with my 45-70 Handi.  they've got nice ambidexterous benches there but they're a tad low,  I ended up having to hunker down behind that thing and soak up all the recoil for 15 or so rounds.  I was glad to be done when all the brass was empty.  I was determined not to take any back full tho. :-D  Next time I'm taking my portable bench with me.  Much better in that regard.

Our range is very informal, and I prefer to 'bench rest' by standing up and using an upright post as a rest. No,i'ts not scientific, but it don'lt beat the snot outta me that way neither.

Testing heavy kickers I have two remedies. 25 pound bag of #9 skeet shot between the shoulder and the butt. The other is a state of the art
Amercan Shooting Rest. With this rest you just pull the trigger. It clamps to the front of bench and is fully adjustable for windage and elevation.

I have a friend in his 70's and he told me when he was training with the M1 Garand it would kick the crap out of him. His commander told him to tape a tampon on his shoulder. Sure enough he taped 2 on and it apparently helped him pretty good.

recoil taming
« Reply #8 on: April 12, 2005, 05:51:39 AM »
I did several things with my BC classic to keep it from giving me gangrene in my shoulder and upper arm.  A Past recoil shoulder absorber (straps on your shoulder over your shirt) for range use was the first.  Then, when I restocked, I installed a Mercury recoil reducer in the buttstock under a limbsaver recoil pad.  I can't say it's a pure pussycat now but it's not far from it.  A pleasure to shoot from the bench, even in shirtsleeves.  I have a Savage 110 with composit stock in 30-06 and while I only shoot it from the bench to sight it in, it is a pure terror in the recoil department.  Not too bad shooting it with the Past, but it's next on my list for a Mercury recoil reducer and a Limbsaver.  Shooting should be fun, and pain is not, at least to me.  These little additions have made a lot of difference in my enjoyment of my range time.

When shooting my Handi in 45-70, I place a rolled up towel between my shoulder and the butt of the weapon..  Works like a champ!!

You guys that want a handi chambered in 7,62x54r could just get a M38 mosin nagant... The overall dimensions would be the same, and I'm sure it would kick less than the NEF even w/ the metal butt plate  :)

BnSC,
The idea is not to get a rifle that will shoot the 7.62x54R as cheap as possible. The idea is to get OUR favorite rifle to shoot the 7.62.54R. (Or 303 Brit, or 6.5 Swede, or 257 Roberts, or.......)

mt3030, that was my attempt at humor because of the stout recoil of
45-70... The 45r round is a great, cheap round... A reloader shooting a Handi chambered in that round could acheive the cartridge's greatest accuracy potential...  I figured most people that had owned or fired a M38 or M44 would get it  :)

BTW, I'm a big Enfield fan... I carry a #1mk3 fitted w/a no-gunsmithing scope mount.  It has taken many deer for me!!  A Handi in .303 would really be cool

I have the same setup on my Handi.  I dunno that it really helped much.  :?

I do believe that 2¼lbs of lead in the stock bolt hole will do more to curb recoil than a mercury recoil reducer, but it would also be much heavier in the field than a reducer. From the bench it makes my scoped 45-70 Handi shooting the hot 350gr PMC ammo shoot easy on my shoulder.

I just don't shoot them big suckers, If I'm gonna flinch and pull shots,I change calibers, Not that I can't handle heavy recoil I just don't want to. 8)

Fellas, I've used the lead casting in the copper pipe

in my BC and my perceived recoil is considerably less with the mercury reducer.  Did some firing with my restocked BC for the first time out the other day and it is a pure pleasure to shoot it off the bench now...............

I submit to you that my aging frame is a pretty sensitive index of recoil.  I have retired the Past recoil absorber for now too.  Now I can do some serious shooting and load development.

Nice gun. The stock adds a touch. I have a 45-70 but it is an old calvalry carbine. Its pretty ancient however I have never shot it. I plan to though. Now I have a general idea of the punishment I will have to go through

I don't know much about a calvary carbine but it sounds like it may only be able to handle std loads & not the higher ones the handi's & marlins can handle. Be careful

The standard loads are not too bad for recoil but if it has a steal but plate you will know it

Yeah it has a steel butt plate. I have a feeling I will be able to applaud with my shoulder blades as soon as I get done shooting it.

6-24x42,

The recoil  isn't all THAT bad with standard velocity loads. You would be well advised to wear a jacket or, at least something more over your shoulder than a thin cotten shirt when you fire it.  Just hold it firm to your shoulder and, at your age, you'll likely scarcely notice it.
