Creative waypoint name.
« on: April 11, 2005, 03:40:16 AM »
Had a nice walk in the woods Saturday. Had this real creative waypoint name in "Solly" (The etrex camo). It was so creative I couldn't figure out what I was telling myself. An hour walk had me sitting on the very log I recall sitting on last December. I recall putting the mystery waypoint name in. I still don't have a clue what the name is or why I felt I needed it. It appears I am the only person on Earth who has gone through this. I'm told I'm getting old and finally beginning to believe it. I need no help in amusing myself, a benefit of growing old I suppose.

That is the nice thing about gps units and waypoint names.  You can be creative.

I ended up keeping a document on the computer to remind me exactly what all of the abbreviations mean on my waypoint list. I found myself getting confused about which tree was which. People have told me I'm getting old too, but like usual, I didn't listen. My wife says I've got more energy than the kids. It's hard to pry them away from the computer screen, and get them outside. Video games are the obsession of this generation, and I'm not sure it's a good thing. They're forgetting how to use their imagination. Dang fool kids!

Did I say that?

I have come up with a disorganized format for naming my waypoints for hunting.  I just use the default numbers when trolling for fish.

Where I park=pk1
Where my partner parks=pk2
Where another partner parks=pk3
I will edit my park waypoints if we change parking locations.

We might park vehicles on one side of the mountain and hunt from another location the next day to the vehicles.  This might require a 60 mile round trip for a five mile hunt.

I normally use a numbering system for my campsite.  Last deer season I had three different campsites.  The snow kept running me down to a lower elevations.

Waypoints with camp symbol > CAMP1>CAMP2, AND CAMP3.

Deer Crossing.  Normally I use DC1, DC2 and it goes down the line.

When I find a good buck track I use BT1, and down the line.

A lot of the country I hunt is dry or I find a watering hole in wet country.
WT, WT1, WT2.

Bear Tracks and scat are marked with BT.............

I have also started marking areas that I have cellphone service.
CPhone, CPhone1, ect.

This summer my son, grandson, and I are planning on camping in an area that I took my son camping 30 years ago.  I will give my grandson the care of the Legend pre-loaded with waypoints for the area.  The grandson has never been in the area, and my son has not been there for many years.  In case of an emergency the knowledge of a cellphone service spot is important.  From this switchback there is a clear shot through a couple of mountain gaps to a cell tower many miles away.  In this location a 100 feet makes the difference between service and no service.

Some of my hunting areas are 250 miles apart.  This does not make a difference because by default the nearest waypoints come up first on the waypoint list.  So if I am in the Northern area, I will get DT1,2, 3, and so on.  In the Southern area I might get DT 20, and DT21.  Or Camp 5, or Camp 6.  Again the nearest ones will come up in the default setting.

I must admit that I am not always consistant in naming my waypoints.  I am trying to change that bad habit because I have been giving my hunting partner(s) and wife a map of the area we will be hunting and camping.
