Reintroduction Of Wood Bison
« on: April 11, 2005, 07:14:31 AM »
There is a meeting April 27th at 7 PM, and again on the 28th but I am not sure of the time.  It will be at the Wedgewood Manor here in Fairbanks.  The public is invited, and your support would be appreciated.  I intend to attend, and am bring several friends that are interested.  Hope to see others there.  Rog Hunter

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Sorry I should have told people what the plans were.  Dept. of Fish and Game plan on bringing a small herd of Wood Bison from Canada, and turning them loose in the Yukon Flats.  This is considered a reintroduction since the native elders tell of their forefathers killing the wood bison in the Yukon Flats for food.  And horns of the Wood Bison have been found in the area.  The biologist think they disappeared between 200 and 500 years ago.  They are grassers and browsers so they would only compete with Moose for food but the Moose numbers are so low in that area it's a mute point anyway.  The Wood Bison is larger than the Plains Bison down in Delta.  They are so large that the wolves are not expected to have much affect on their numbers.  Also they will be separated far enough from the Delta herd that they would not be in danger of getting into the same areas and cross breeding, or competing for forage and habitat.

I strongly support the re-introduction as long as sport hunters are guaranteed some hunting opportunity when populations can support it.  I don't want them re-introduced on Pittman Robertson $$ or any other tax payer $$  then reserved for subsistence hunting only.  I do support subsistence opportunities as well.  Any hunting opportunity should be shared.

I love this idea.  A long time ago I did a float trip with one of the guys who first thought this up. I hope it happens.
