Silvertip bullets for 30-30 Win
« on: April 11, 2005, 07:20:32 AM »
I come to the forum with another "where to buy?" question.

Years ago I loaded all of my 30-30 deer cartridges with 150 and 170 grain winchester silvertip bullets.  Some of my hunting pals would argue the use of a silver tip in the 30-30, yet I pretty much regularly hung a nice deer on the pole.

It's been some time since I found a source for silvertip bullets to load with.  Does anybody know who might handle these? My last batch were loaded with corelokts and they are fine but I still like the silvertips for good penetration and retained bullet weight.

I believe you are out of luck.  Winchester stopped selling the 150 and 170 30-30 silvertip bullets as components awhile back.

Load you up some Sierra 150gr or 170gr flat points, they're the most accurate, and best performers I've found yet for the .30-30. I too was a big fan  of the 150gr silvertip, and have a couple boxes stashed away somewhere- If you're looking for a deep penetrator, the Partition flat point or the Barnes-X flat point will  both give good exit wounds.  The Sierras are my first choice for  getting the venison on the table!

I got a box of 1,000 170 grain Silver Tips from Midway a few years ago.  I don't know if they still offer them; I haven't checked lately.  My only .30/30 is a Savage Model 24 over/under and I'm not limited to flat-nosed bullets in it.

I have a box of the 150g silvertips, but have yet to come up with a real good load. I have a load with Siearra 170g fp's that have 3 shots touching at 50 yards, but have not got a 150g bullet to shoot that good.  I hope to not only get a good load with the 150's, but also get a good load for the 125g HP's, for varminting.  My wife's bolt action Stevens loves Remington 125g psp's, and H335, but my Winchester seems to be picky.
