Total head separation!
« on: April 11, 2005, 06:18:28 PM »
I had a piece of brass split completly in half! The head of the brass ejected and the rest is stuck in the chamber of my encore. I can't get it out. It wasn't a hot load or anything. It was Winchester brass. 22-250. Anyone have any ideas on how to get it out. A cleaning rod does nothing because is passes right by the brass.

Screw a threading tap into the brass (not too big) and pull the brass out. Have also used a larger brass brush on a cleaning rod, in your case go with a .270-30 cal and give that a try. Insert it from the chamber end and into the neck a bit, then try and pull it back out. Either you are pushing your shoulder back too far when your resizing (too much headspace) or have just reloaded that brass to the end of it's life.

Brownells makes a tool specifically for that purpose. Any gunsmith will have one, and the tool is not expensive.  I believe it is called a split case remover, but I am not sure.

I would just grind on the edge of an old cheap flat screwdriver. Grind a sharp claw on the end then dig hard into the inside of the case and try to pull it out. Put the barrel in a vice to hold it because you may have to put a lot of sideways pressure on the screwdriver to dig deep enough into the brass. Once it brakes free it will just pop out.

I think I reloaded the case too many times and did not notice the streching aroung the head. I found a few more that I tossed out. All of them were Winchester brass. I had a gunsmith tell me he could remove it for $30, I think for that much I could buy something to do it myself....

Just run a bronze brush down the barrel and see if that knocks it out. I had a 243 split once and the end of the cleaning rod could be felt contacting the case mouth and I was able to tap it out. I would try this before I would pay $30. Going in from the muzzle with the rifle horizontal, slide the cleaning rod in without anything attached. You should be able to feel the case mouth touch the cleaning rod. Gentle taps at this point should be all you need. It isn't rocket science and definately not worth spending $30!!!!!!!

Safest way to get this out is a chamber cast.  I've had the exact same thing happen where I couldn't get it out with a bore brush.  I just didn't like the idea of gouging around the chamber with something that might scratch or damage the chamber.  A chamber cast with cerosafe will get it right out for you.

Here is a picture of what I did. I decided to go get the needle nose pliars out of the tool box and get a wire hanger. I cut the wire hanger and bent it up into a nice home made brass puller (Patent Pending) With the tool and some Break-Free it only took a second to get out. I saved $30 in gunsmith fees.
