I do not have a dog but this is a quick story aboyut My fathers Yellow lab, Woodrow.
At the time he was about a 8 months old.
Dad had to work and had me go hunting with Woodrow and one of his friends in NC who brought his Yellow lab out to the farm for dove.
Dad's buddy hit one and it went in behind the barn and he was yelling at his dog to go fetch.  A couple minutes later he was still yelling "monster- monster, ...NO here "  And yelled to me to see if Woodrow could find the bird.
I walked over to the drainage ditch and sat Woodrow down and lined him up to where Rob said the bird was.  i took out a shell and tossed it into the weeds and sent the dog.  he junped the ditch went strait to the spot where i tossed the shell and sniffed around, and I saw him pick up something.  He brought me my shell.  Carried it in his mouth like it was a cigar. I took the shell, praised him and said go get the dead bird.  He turned around jumped the ditch and went to he same spot i tossed the shell and came back with the bird.  His first real retreive.
I am convinced that all dogs are good.  The great ones are how much time the owners spend with the dog, working on the fundimentals.

Another Quick Woodrow story-
He is clearly my father's dog.  This is a first dog for my stepmother and one day while I was there dad was leaving and since we were home he did not attach the electric fence collar to the dog.  As he backed out the dog was following his truck and my step mother was yelling for Woodrow to come.
Not wanting to take over, I made a simple suggestion that she needs to use commands the dog knows.  So I spelled SIT.  And said "Juila, S. I. T."  She still yelled at the woodrow to come but sat down on the front porch bench while doing it.  I guess Dad has more than the Dog trained.   :o
