I LOVE beaver trapping!!!
« on: April 12, 2005, 12:10:12 PM »
No, I didn't catch anything yet at school here. I apparently put my traps in at a bad time, because every day I've found that my traps are totally submerged and my castor mounds are washed away from the rising water levels. They are back close to normal levels now, so hopefully I get a whole night of steady water.

I'm excited because I am learning so much about the habits of beaver every day out. Today for instance I found tracks going up into the woods, so I followed them to a popple that was chewed so freshly, that it was still sliding down in between two other trees, probably because its so windy. 10 yards away there was another 15 inch popple that is only half chewed through, needless to say I put a trap in the water right where the trail hits shore.

I also found a birch along shore that was so fresh that there was sap just running out of the chewed part, and all of the branches were chewed off from last night also.

Best of all I saw one of the sneaky little devils that I am going after. Apparently he was up in the woods doing some work and when I was walking out he saw me and slapped his tail and just about made me crap my pants.

Anyhow, I'm starting to get more of a handle of how they move around, and when the water was really low last Friday, I could see every entrance channel that went to all of the different old bank dens as well as the hut, and that helps with knowing what to look for on shore when finding dens!!

I don't know what it is about these big "rats", but I sure love chasing them around..........
