Which Swift scope???
« on: April 12, 2005, 09:32:29 PM »
Currently have a Simmons 4x12x40 on my .223 Handi heavy barrell.  It came that way, new, as a package deal.  I've been using it  three years now and it's adequate for me out to about 275 yards for groundhogs.  At distances much beyond that, the cross hairs begin to obscure the target.  Up this point that hasn't been much of a problem because of the limited distances here in norhteastern Ohio.  However, I have recently located some larger farms where the distances far exceed that and my Simmons scope isn't enough. I want a scope that will do the job out to four or five hundred yards.  I don't reload and use Blackhills reloads with the 50 grain V-max bullet.  I'm interested  in the Swift line of scopes and I'm trying to decide between the 6x24x50 or the 8x32x50.  My hunting style is usually stalking then firing from the prone position off of a Harris bipod.   I have not found a local supplier where I can actually see the scopes. So I may have to order off the internet.  Any input will be appreciated in helping me decide which scope will work best. Price does not seem to be an issue. Because the differnce between the scopes is minimal, something like $25.

Your asking an awful lot of that little handi rifle with it's one in 12 twist. I have found that the bullets become unstable at about 300-350yds and accuracy falls off when they yaw. If your getting better out of yours then that is awsome for you. I would talk with the folks at swift and see which scope has the finer cross hair or 1/8" moa settings with target adjustable dials this Might be and indicator of which scope would be better suited to your needs...good luck on your quest.

I have purchased three premier grade Swift scopes from this outfit     They have some pretty good prices http://www.digitalfotoclub.com/sc/sublistings.asp?mainid=5&catid=6&subID=68 :D.......You might consider Mueller scopes also...am hearing some good things about them although I haven't tried one ( comparable in price to Swift) http://www.theopticzone.com/ Quickdtoo likes um!! Alot!

All Swift scope have a medium duplex reticle which is a bit course for your intended use. For that price range I would recommend the Mueller Eraticator 8.5-25x50, it has super fine X-hairs and a dot that covers less that 2" at 200yds or approx 3/8" at 100yds. The dot can be use illuminated or black, also. I have one on my .204 Ruger Handi and it works just great. Jon at The Optic Zone has free shipping and sun shade with them this month and you won't beat his price or service....It's also available in silver now!!! He sells the Eraticator for $199.99 which is just a bit more than the Swifts, but after shipping on the Swifts, you'll be at the same cost since Jon ships free!

Hello, rcn........I don't think you can go wrong listening to Deadeye and Quick,,these fellas know their stuff when it comes to shooting.
I have the 8-32x50 Swift premier on my 243 ultra,,nice scope for the $$ but it does become a bit hazy at the higher power,,it will shoot POA though the powers and it does make the ultra tip the scales at over 10#'s.
If the Mueller would not have been so new to the market when I was looking,,I may have got one of them.  There has been some great reports on them since they've become more noticable.
Good hunting to you......you're fortunate to have a great place to hunt like you describe here in NEO.
