Ruger #1 in 45-70
« on: April 13, 2005, 07:37:57 AM »
I have been wanting a #1 in 45-70 for some time now and may be picking one up this week.  I have a question about mercury recoil recucers fitting in the stock.  Does anyone know if the #1 is built to accept one?
I have a Past recoil pad for bench work but would like something more/other for the field. Thanks, Gary

I have a Ruger #1 in 45-70. I am shooting some stout loads. When on the bench I use a Past pad. But when hunting I don't even feel the recoil. I think a mercury recoil reducer will fit, but you may have to open the stock a little to accommodate it.  Give there guys a call and see what they say. Also measure the hole in the stock and get the diameter.

Like Redhawk said, in the field, you won't notice the recoil.  For bench work, that's different.  I'd also suggest simply using a PAST pad and maybe a padded shooting vest/shirt if needed.  I'd think the stock would need to be reamed out for any recoil device.
Good choice though.  Looked at one this past weekend.  One will be in the gun room by Dec. 31st.

Hi GG,

I put a limbsaver prefit pad on mine and I love it.  I did it mostly to correct eye relief for a leupold scout scope (needs 13").  I really like this set up.  Try the limb saver rather than the mercury reducer which will keep the weight down.

Good luck....you'll love the #1!

I have a #1 in 458 which I considered the reducer for some time ago but health concerns have kept me from shooting for a while.  I emailed them and asked specifically which one would fit and they told me a particular model and did not mention that any modifications were needed to the stock to make it fit.  You might call or email the company in question for specific details though.  I think they add around 6-8 oz of weight, which might not be much, but seems like in "40 years with the 45-70" the author would not carry more than 3 rounds in the "butt cuff" on the stock or it would upset the balance of the rifle.  Just food for thought, those #1 45-70s can sure kick with stout loads from the bench.  That's why I bought a 458 with a heavy barrel and shoot 45-70 level loads in it...

Whatever you do, you will love the #1.  A fine rifle like no other.

Brutal is the work that describes shooting my # 1 from the bench.  I load a 423 grain bullet at a moderate 1838 f/s.  Don't need anything more.  From the bench, I take a sandbag and bend it under the toe and over the butt plate.  Works wonders dampening the recoil.

I put a 16 ounce mercury recoil reducer in my Marlin Guide Gun and would highly recommend them.  Honestly, I don't know if it's just the extra weight or if the mercury actually does some good, but whatever... It cuts the recoil considerably.    By the way, I call this rifle my "Lil' Thumper", because it'll thump on both ends.

Upon taking off the factory recoil pad (if you can call it that), I found that there was no hole at all in the back end of the stock, so had to drill out a 1" hole for the 7/8" diameter recoil reducer.   When I got the hole deep enough, I dropped in the reducer & poured epoxy mix around it to glue in place.

Of course these reducers come in different weights, lengths, and diameters.
