Has anyone seen one of these yet?
I would think Taurus will be next on the list. They claim 3 times the energy of the 44 Mag and bullets from 300-475 grains
Sounds like POTENT stuff here
475 grain bullets at 1600 fps?

Hello, I've been a regular reader at Ross in Range which has the most info and even pics of a custom nonlug model John Ross made up!
The short story is his articles have persuaded me to order one of the Sledgehammer Smiths!

I got 1 about 2 months ago,they are very powerful.I cast my own bullets 325gr thru 600gr the 325gr can easily do 1900 fps the 600gr about 1450 fps max ,they are very accurate with most bullet weights,Hernry Bowman is correct about John Ross and the data he has with the bullets he has been shooting,Dont let anybody fool you these guns are very powerful,I do hope they come out with a 5"-6" model,Sean

I was really wondering what the hell would you do with a .500 cal revolver? It is a verylarge caliber and I would guess that if you hit a deer with it you would ruin quite a bit of meat. I thought the 454 casull was a bit overkill for deer. This thing takes the cake. Has there been any comparison of the 454 and 500? All I ever hear and read about is muzzle energy what about 100yds and beyond?

Did you read the articles at John Ross' page?
The comments I've read in reasearching the new .500 are very similiar to what was said in the mid-50s when the .44 Magnum was introduced, too big and too powerful etc.
I've collected guns and done my own custom loads for many years now, one does not need to load to max power levels to enjoy the gun anymore than using the 600HP available in my Corvette but it's niced to know it's there!

I don't know haw people say the S&W500 is to much gun for Deer, I shoot a .50 Cal Muzzleloader with 2 Triple 7 pellets. I use 295 gr. power belt bullets. The muzzleloader has a faster speed than the S&W500. The damage to the deer with the 295 gr. bullet I shot was not in excess and very little meat was damaged. If I use a cast bullet in the S&W500 the entrance hole and exit hole will almost be the same. The cast bullets from Cast Performance are very hard bullets and expand very little. I shot a Boar with my 44MAG with 300 gr. Cast Performance bullets and the bullet passed through the right rib cage, heart and out the left shoulder. The exit wound was just a little bigger than entrance hole. I have seen a 30-06 do a lot of damage to a deer, but good shot placement will do little damage to the main meat anyways. Any deer round and different bullet style shot in a shoulder will cause excessive damage. Not just a S&W500. Just my humble opinion.

I have never seen a better looking cast bullet then the Cast Performance. Mine are the 370 grain for the S&W 500. What a good looking bullet.

What load do you use for the 300 gr in the 44 mag?

I am using 18.5 gr. of A2400 in my 44MAG with the 300 gr. Cast Performance.

I was shooting Cast Performance bullets. But I found Montana Bullet Works to be almost half the price and equal quality. He has a large selection for the 500MAG.

I'll stick with my Magnum Research BFR in .45-70 with 10" bbl. I doubt there is anything a .500 can do that it can't, especially with 552 Gr. cast bullets. Bill T.

I had my hands on one at the last gun show. The thing is massive, and makes my 9.5 inch SRH look almost petite. I don't think my tendonitis would let me shoot the 500 too many times. I'll stick to my .44, .45, and .480......unless Ruger comes out with one in a levergun.

You need to try and shot a 500MAG with some 575 gr. bullets. I think you will be impressed. :grin: I will be trying some 700 gr. also.

The recoil is not objectionable. There are a lot of .44 magnums that are more disturbing to shoot. Fairly sharp straight back recoil and then the gun rises. If you are using two hands, facing the target, it generally makes you take a step back. One handed at the usual NRA stance and this doesn't happen. Must be the compensator working. This was my first shots ever with one at 25 yards:

The Hornady factory load calculates out at 2800 foot pounds- the same as a .30-06 with a 150 grain bullet at 2900 fps
