Brewster/Jeff Davis County

Can anyone comment on hunting opportunities in the Brewster or Jeff Davis County area?  I really liked the area when I periodically worked at MacDonald Observatory near Ft. Davis and have put it on my list of possible areas to retire to when the time comes.  I remember seeing quite a few antelope and deer in the area, but what about other big game, varmints/predators, etc?

You'll also find all types of varmints....coyotes, bobcats, lions, etc along with Aoudad Sheep.  Aoudad are awesome animals and hard to hunt....very physically demanding in that country.  I believe there are a few whitetails around there too, as well as javelinas.

Mule deer?   I haven't been out there in years, but it seems like good Mule Deer country.  Are there any?  Many Mule Deer in that area?

Yeah Mark, they're out there.

But they ain't big like you see further north in NM and CO.

Most of 'em seem to be about the same size as the Whitetails up in North TX.
They may talk of a "New Order" in the  world, but what they have in mind is only a revival of the oldest and worst tyranny.   No liberty, no religion, no hope.   It is an unholy alliance of power and pelf to dominate and to enslave the human race.

the mulies I saw in Caprock Canyon were pretty nice sized.  Wish I ahd been hunting them instead of Aoudad.

:D I usually spend a month-six weeks in the Big Bend area each year.  I have seen all kinds of game there over the years.  There is a good population of mule deer and some will compare in size to those found in N.M. or Co.  While on the Woodard and Walker ranches (between Alpine and Study Butte) a while back I seen good numbers of mule deer.  One was a trophy anyone could be proud of.

Talking to the game folks and ranchers in this area, I learned there are a lot of mule-white tail cross breeds.  These deer are considerably smaller than the average mullie, but slightly larger than the average whitetail.  The cross usually has the appearance of the mullie, therefore, most folks assume they are mullies.  This is how a lot of the rumor of small mullies in West Texas get started.
