I have to say thanks to all the people who got me to buy me a new handi ;)
I was lookin for a good yote gun and I couldnt pass this puppy up at gander for 190$. I just threw a cheap tasco thats suprisingly not to bad untill i can save up some more money to get somethin better. All they had was the 50 packs of winchester 45gr. I hope they are just as good as the 40 packs.

Ive got a question : Do you just use normal gun oil to clean the ejector etc.? And another thing , i dont have a bore sighter so how would you know if ur going to hit paper? Sorry Im a bit new at sighting in rifles , the last rifle I got was already bore sighted. Thanks

Congrats!  I just purchased my second Handi (223 Ultra Varmint) a few weeks ago.  I think you will love it.  Can't wait to go P-dog'n.  You might want to read up on how to break it in and the o-ring trick to get better accuracy.  Also check your scope rail over and make sure everything is secure.

I don't oil my extractor due to it attracts dirt.  I use a very lite shot of Dura Lube (as seen on TV).  Seems to work just fine.

As for sighting it in...the easiest way is to break open the action while the gun is sitting in the gun rest.  Look down the bore of the barrel so you can see the target.  Then very carefully adjust your scope so you can see the same spot on the target.  This will at least get you on paper.

270,
Test your rifle before going the o-ring trick. Many of the Handis shoot very good right out the box.

one more thing. The scope rail near the end isnt touching the barrel. Is this normal? Its completely flush with it untill about the last inch.

What James said. Also, the scope rail supplied with Ultra rifles has a set screw out nearer the front which is adjusted against the barrel for support.
This Ultra rail is also an accessory available form NEF.

You really don't want to adjust the screw down against the barrel...it's there for use as a stop  when using large objectives scopes...you want to have a tiny space between the bottom of the screw and barrel...about .0015" is what I have mine set at...and the factory says about a buinsess cards thickness..

For "getting on paper" I have found over time that it is just plum simple to take my first shot off hand at 25 yards. Have yet to not be on paper at that distance.

Mac,
Thanks for that tip. Mine all came from the factory just barely touching. I thought that was the correct adjustment.

Read up on all the info on stuck cases here and do some of the things suggested like polish the chamber and bore, before shooting.  It will save frustration and time.

Make sure ALL the oil is out of the chamber and off the ammo before shooting too.  Major cause of stuck cases in the Handi.

Welcome aboard. :D

That is very nice looking. I have been using $50 Tascos for years here in Penn. and never had one fail. They are awsome cheap scopes. Does your Handi have the Bull Barrel? I may get one. Thanks-Jack.

Range Report :

I bore sighted it using the carboard box trick in my yard and I was dead on at 25yds. I moved on o 100 and for some reason I couldnt get it to hit good so I moved back to 50 yds and the groups were very tight , they were touching. It got to late to move back to 100 , but I think im going to go back next time and make sure its on at 100. If its about an inch high at 50 I figured that it should be good at 100? I had no ejection problems or anything ( knock on wood ) so im glad.

Hi 270_ Abolt. The 223 rem shoots pretty flat. If you want it zeroed at 100 yards, the bullet will still be climbing at 50 yards. 55gr bullet should be .25" low at 50 yards. 40gr bullet should be .36" low at 50 yards. Should be right on at 100, and drop about 3" at 200. HTH.

Best, Irv

I want to update this because I was able to go back to the range today. At 100 yds I was about 6 inches high. Once I had it dead on I shot several groups 1" - 1 1/2" , thats all i need ;) I love these little guns , they shoot SO good and are cheap! I was shooting the winchester 45gr jhp. My friend went along with me and he was shooting some really cheap barnaul ammo ( i think its russian ammo ). They were 55gr FMJ and I shot one just to see how it shot , and it shot great to my suprise. Next time im going to try the Black Hills with V-Max.

ALso, im just curious on how this ammo will perform on yotes and bobcats.
