Can't decide which one I should keep in my nightstand ...

... sixteen rounds of 9mm or twelve rounds of .40S&W.

Well, from looking at the picture I might be wrong. But, It looks like the .40S&W round are hollow points. If that is the case and you do not have any hollow points in the 9MM, I would do the .40S&W. If you have hollow points for both, or FMJ for both for home invation I think both would work fine.

I would not want to fire 7, 12 or even 16 rounds in my home. That means one thing. You missed alot and if you have people in other rooms of the house that could be bad. Best bet would be to handle it in two or three rounds.

As far as voting I will vote .40S&W only because I think that is hollow points in the picture. But a 9mm would work fine.

So would a 7 rounds in a 1911

I voted for the .40 but there were only two criteria given.
I carry, on various occasion and at my bedside (or handy, in any event), several, from a .380 PPK to a .45 with variations of .38 S&W revolver, .357 SIG, FN5, .40.
It take only one shot at best, from any of these. If I miss, it takes as many as I can shoot till I hit.
Not too be flippant about the question but based, on the thought, if it is volume, I would choose the 20 rounds from my FN5 plus the three other magazines loaded and handy.
Based on the thought of power I would choose the .45 and one bullet.

If that was a Glock 9MM you would not need 2MAGS. You could get a 32 round MAG.

I'd rather have 15rds of 357SIG over any of them!!!!!!!!   Thats the ultimate bad guy stopper!!!    Its rated at 100% in the bad guy fatality rate by the LEO's in Texas and 99% by the LEO's in Maryland so far.  If not the 357SIG with its magnum performance it has to be the 357magnum its the speed and shocking power of the 125gr JHP bullet.  BigBill

How about three?

... But sticking with what I already own, which of the two would be a better choice sixteen? 9mms or twelve .40S&Ws?

You could always come to my house. At times the old night stand gets the DE on it.

Hell, if you miss at lest then you will flash blind, catch on fire and cook the guy you are trying to hit.

My wife hates it though she will not use it, so just incase, I do not leave it out to much. I do CCW it in the winter under my arm though. Mostly only for kicks. Or if I go into a bad area to look at houses, I will put it on my hip with a t-shirt on. As kinda a try me thing.

You mean one for each hand?   Probably because I have a better chance of hitting my intended target by using a two-hand hold on the pistol instead of one hand.

I still could keep both of them in there but then the question becomes: Which one should I reach for first?

I'd take the 15+1 rounds in my Taurus .40 S&W, plus an extra mag...32 rounds of .40!!!!     And if I could just get my wife to buy it for me, I'd hang a Surefire light under it so I could make sure the rounds went into the bad guy, not the next room

Where's the button for both? Actually I keep a Glock 21 loaded with 14 rds of Talons by my bed. My wife has a Glock 36 loaded with 7 more on her side. Course the AR is not far away--------------

I keep a 357 loaded and a Glock 20 in 10 mm. But if I had to choose I'd take the 40 its a bigger bullet. I figure if you can't hit him with the first shot, you might die tring with the rest of the rounds. :D

Given the choice I'd have to say the .40.  In the unlikely event that I'd be in a defensive shooting situation, stats show it would involve maybe two shots. Thats why my carry choice is heavy, wide .44spl or 10mm. Its all about shot placement.  I would be more concerned with the shot getting where it needs to be (possibly through heavy clothing, an arm etc.)  than overpenetration.
We must pass along/encourage hunting, shooting, the outdoors etcetera.

I'd rather have ONE hit than two dozen misses.  If I go through 9 rounds of .45 ACP without a hit, the fight is over and I lost -- all the exra magazine capacity in the world won't change that.

I choose:

Reliability -- it has to go bang every time I pull the trigger.
Shootability -- they have to hit pretty close to where I want them to hit.
Power -- when they hit, they have to do the job
Concealibility -- a nice flat package does it for me.
