would any of you really use .357M at night, indoors? I think that's overkill, maybe noise isn't that big of a factor but muzzle flash will be (IMO)
I have a S&W 686 ready to go, with 6 .38s.

I prefer a revolver over a semi auto, even though I know the old 1911 won't let me down.
As for the poll, haven't got experience with the .40 S&W but I'd prefer it no doubt over the 9 mille anyday. I'd use the 45, a 10 mm or alike over the 9mm also, I guess I'n not that big af a 9 mm enthousiast

Of your two choices I'd take the 40 S&W.

The better you shoot a gun, the more effective it is.  Decent 9mm practice ammo (brass case, American made) can usually be had for $5-6 box/50 if you look around a little and buy by the case.  If ammo cost is a factor, the 9mm is a very inexpensive pistol to practice with.  You can hardly even reload ammo at that cost, likely not worth your time in any case.  I'd take a 9mm that I'm very good with than anything else I couldn't shoot well.

No question, I'd go with the 9mm w/ a full mag of Winchester +P+ 124gr SXT's.  Its very close in terminal ballistics to the .357 SIG, with a lot less recoil and flash than it or the .40 (ever shoot a .357 SIG in low lit room??).

My choice is a forty.........2 well placed rounds to the center mass.

Then hopefully it's all over but the authorities questions.

I feel the bigger the bullet the better. Also if you shoot all those rounds and don't connect your done. All you need is ONE bullet to connect so really its how well you shoot not how many round the gun holds that counts. Thats how I feel but my 40 has a 29 round mag and my 9mm has a 30 round mag :D

The easy answer is the one you shoot the best under stress, but if the guns are identical, I'd go with the bigger bullet.  I own a 40, but I'd reach for the 357 first, because I shoot it better.  It's where you hit them that matters most, and no, I don't feel handicapped with only six.  Unless, of course, there are seven of them.  Then firepower takes precedence!  But the first six are gonna see the 38, anybody who wants to stick around after that will hear the 40 barking.  If the problem still isn't solved, I'm probably screwed anyway.
