Tried Out My 5" J frame The Other Day
« on: April 16, 2005, 06:22:24 PM »
Hi All,
I aquired a new 5" J frame .357 the other day and went to the range to try it.  It has some nice laminated wood grips that felt good until I fired it...OUCH!  It was quite a handfull, even with fairly mild .357 loads.  I can see some rubber Hogues in it's future.  I guess if I ever go grizz hunting I'll have to stick to the .500...it's easier on the hand.
Best,
TnNuc

I can't imagine why they even make a 5" barrel in the J frame.  I can imagine the recloil in that light gun with a full house 357 load, it'd probably be better to drop down to 38 spec +P loads.

Can we see a photo of this 5" J-frame? Or a link? It really has me curious.

The 5" steel frame model should handle recoil better than a 2" scandium J Frame with 357 loads- that's where the OUCH is! I think this new variant is an interesting revolver. One would be great with 38 Special wadcutters for general woodsbumming and plinking. Nuc, how is the accuracy? Did you try any 38 Specials? 8)

Just the rambling thoughts of an old fat man but I'm thinking it might be a typo and the barrel really be only 3" long. I have a S&W 60 with the 3" barrel and adjustable sights. It also wears CTC laser grips. Got it as soon as they made the gun in .357 Mag and traded my same gun in .38 special in on it. Recoil even with full house loads is relatively mild to me.

Tnrifleman,
The ouch came from those little-bitty wood grips that came on the gun.  They caused it to roll in my hand and let the web catch it.  I replaced them with some rubber grips that the mod 60s normally have, but haven't had time to try them out yet.  The loads I used were some 158g lead SWCs that were made up for another gun and they were only "fair" in this one.  I guess it will take a little tuning to see what it will do.

Graybeard,
It's actually a 5".  It's a new model this year.  I'm not sure yet where a 5" is going to fit in yet, but it it seemed like it wanted me to take it home with me. :) .  I doubt if there is a factory holster for it, so I'll have to get out the awl and leather and whip something up.

Best,

Here is a link to a Gun Blast article by Jeff Quinn.

http://www.gunblast.com/SW60_KitGun.htm

I have been looking at one of these for my wife and son to shoot.

I have handled one in a local gun shop and it feels very good.

I'm just working on the price with them so may have one soon.

 I have a model 649 and model 60, both with the 2 inch barrel, both have Crimson Trace grips.  Firing full blown .357 is no problem shooting with a two hand grip.  You just have to watch how your hands are positioned or you will suffer a little powder burn.

I can't understand anyone being uncomfortable with the .357, other than the muzzel flash from the short barrels there is no problem for me. At night they look like flame throwers...........

Hello
It appears that S&W has done the same with this fame as many others in making the grips SHORT and inapropriate to the frame size. They should have used a set like was available years back and refered to as a combat grip. These would look more like they belonged on that frame and would add comfort and all around good looks to there new model. Regards, Hammerdown

I have the three inch model, and want a two and also a five inch. They are the perfect packing revolvers around the farm.

When I purchased it SnW said that full  house loads could be used so I shot five rounds of Georgia Arms deer buster loads through it and the recoil was quite a handful but certainly not unmanageable.

After several thousand rounds through it it is as accurate as ever. Back when I had time to shoot and was fairly proficient it would easily knock down a four inch steel plate at seventy yards more times than not. Now I might could hit a can at twenty yards on a good day.

The black rubber boot grips with just the pinky curvature seem to be the best all round grips for concealablility and shooting. I would probably part with all my other handguns before loosing this one. It's a great little toter.
