1862 Siege Mortar Pictures

Here are some pictures of the 10” siege mortar in front of the old armory in Saratoga Springs, NY.  I forgot how massive these things are.  The weight stamped on the barrel reads 17196 lbs.  That is a lot of mortar!

Thanks for the pictures.  Judging from the weight, that must be a 13" seacoast mortar.  The listed weight for that type is 17250 lbs, which is close enough.

Comparing the siege mortars vs. the seacoast mortars, the siege mortars are much lighter.  A 10" siege mortar weighs 1900 lbs vs. a 10" seacoast mortar at 7300 lbs (weights from the Encyclopedia at CivilWarArtillery.org).  They must have used a lot more powder and heavier shot in the seacoast mortars.

I can see why they have wheels.

Now that I think about it, I think it is a 13" seacoast.  I never measured it I just assumed it was 10".  The size of the bore is surprisingly deceptive.  With so much metal around it, it looks much smaller than it is.

Thanks for the correction.
