22 Mag Shooters
« on: April 17, 2005, 05:44:12 PM »
I found a deal on a frame and 3 barrels, one of which was a 22 Mag.  The others will go up for sale, but the 22 Mag is one I always thought about getting.  I shot it today and got a 3/4" group at 50 yards once I sigted the scope in.  However I could not repeat that good of accuracy after the first group which I assume was because I am getting over the flue and could tell I was a little shaky.

It seems the 22 Mag round is one that people either love or hate and I plan on testing this one a little more, but was just curious what kind of accuracy some others are getting with theirs.

It depends on the bullet.  With traditional .22 aryle cast bullets with a copper wash 3/4 at 50 yards is about right.  With Remington Premier V-mags with jacketed bullets ragged one hole groups are possible at 50 yards.

With good bullets it is nearly as accurate as my 17HMR, but not quite.  With any of them it is good enough for hunting the size game you are likely to use a .22 mag on.  My shots tend to be less than 50 yards and I am of an age where I nearly always pick a place where I can get some kind of rest.

I had one several years ago, seems like your 3/4 group size is a little better than I used to get with mine.  :D

I've got a bullberry 20 inch bull barrel that shoots winchester 40 grain FMJ and JHPs into one ragged hole at 50 yards, it shoots the winchester dynapoint into about an inch and a quarter and CCI FMJs into about an inch and a half.  I haven't gotten any other brands, but will try them when I can get my hands on some...Federal, remington, who ever else makes them.
The key to success with the 22 mag is finding the ammo your gun shoots best and then sticking with it.  I have never been a 22 mag fan, but this barrel shoots much better than my bullberry 22 hornet barrel on a routine basis.  I actually bought the barrel to rechamber to a 221 fireball, but it is so consistent that would be a crime...the hornet may get the  fireball rechamber...

CG had one for years and did a lot of work on prarrie dogs , jackrabbits , couple of ground hogs( a little light for that duty but close range and head shots worked VERYwell). I liked mine and it's a pretty good small game round with solids. I did well on PD's out to 100 yards with a center hit . The groups you are getting sound pretty decent  for a factory barrel. I have a Ruger 77R -Target that will shoot better but not by much. Keep it they are good for a lot of things when you want a little more power than a 22LR will put out and don't want to reload.

Jim,
Good to hear from you!  I've been away and away from the computer for a long time...glad to hear from you.  Looks like life will be more normal for a while...interesting last few months.  I'm actually getting to shoot a little too now!
