Oil Finishing Stock
« on: April 18, 2005, 02:01:49 AM »
I have a new CDL on order, and want to strip the stock for an oil finish.  Any thoughts on how to strip the stock without damaging the plastic black forend tip, and grip cap?   An oil finish should have the same sheen as the black satin tip.  I  thought about covering it with tape and using a standard stipper.    Any thoughts would be helpful.       Thanks,   Curly

I use a propane torch to soften the finish and scrape it off.  the plastic tip is NOT heated and after the wood cools it is sanded. The sanding process will blend and prepare the stock and tip/cap for refinishing. A search should find the decription for you on this thread.  I use TruOil as a finish.  sometimes preceded with a material called "Okeene".
