Can a Encore 20 ga Rifled Barrel Be Scoped?
« on: April 18, 2005, 07:48:40 AM »
T/C Encore Shooters:

Since I've never seen one, I was wondering if you can scope the Encore 20ga rifled barrel.  If not, how about a Williams receiver sight?  I'm also considering this set-up with a 7mm -08 barrel as my T?C package for now.

Thanks for the help.  Good Shooting! :-)

The 20 gauge barrel can be scoped like any other Encore barrel.  I've got a Nikon 3 X 9 on mine.  The barrel shoots  two inch groups at 100 yards using Winchester Supreme Partition or Remington Buckhammer slugs.  Make sure you locktite the base and ring screws.  My barrel came shiny blued, so I used flat paint to cut the glare.  The 20 with modern slug loads kills deer just as well as the 12 from my experience.  I've killed over 50 deer with 12 gauge loads over the years, and six so far with my new Encore 20.  The results were the same, including the observed tissue destruction when field dressing.  There is a huge difference in felt recoil.  I did put a Sims limbsaver pad on my Encore which helps alot.  The high velocity 12 slugs can have wicked recoil.  The 20 is much more fun to shoot.

Scienceguy:

Thanks for the reply.  I've never seen an Encore or the 20 ga barrel except in magazines and on the T/C website's catalog so I wasn't sure if you could.  Also, thank you for the range and field report.  I really appreciated this info too.

As I've grown older, I find that carrying my 12 ga deer gun is becoming just a little more noticeable and I dred range time with the sabot slugs.  That 12 ga pump beats me even with the weight and a ported barrel.  As you mentioned, those new 20 ga. sabot loads are very impressive so one way or another I'm going to be carrying a 20 ga when our southern tier opens.

By the way, I see that Sims has a slip over recoil pad out.  Have you heard anything about their effectiveness?  Again, thanks for the reply and all the info because I really did appreciate it.

Good shooting! :-)
