Fit?
« on: April 18, 2005, 01:14:26 PM »
I bought a Savage 420 O/U that I am restoring.  I might shoot a few dove but most of the time I will shoot clay targets when the kids come home.
Since I am refinishing the stock I was thinking recoil pads come in different sizes I might try to make the gun fit me better. I read or heard that you measure from you inside elbow to your trigger finger or somewhere. Is there and easy answer to this question? Thanks Guy SE Okla.

You can measure your lenght of pull by bending your arm in a 90 degree angle. Like you are going to flex your bicep muscle. You can then measure the distance along the inner arm from the bend just below your bicep to your trigger finger. Bend your trigger finger as if you are getting ready to pull the trigger. This should give you an idea of your length of pull. You can also bend your arm as stated above and place the butt or recoil pad just below your bicep with the shotgun resting along your inner arm.  Your trigger finger should then rest on the trigger if the lenght is correct.

You can play all sorts of games and measure most any body part you want to. But if you want it to have the correct pull length for you then mount the gun and keep adding or taking away until you're thumb doesn't contact your nose. That's the real measure of proper length of pull.

Graybeard, I joined this forum as most people seem to conduct themselves in a professional manner. However as you referred to my post as playing games or measuring any body parts, that theory went right out the window. Most shooting professionals use my stated method as a quick way to measure lenght of pull. Your method would work but your thumb hitting your nose would depend more on your drop at heel, drop at comb, length to heel and cast on or cast off for your shooting style. To have a shotgun properly fitted to the shooter takes a lot of time with a professional who takes measurements of various body parts as well as many measurements of the try out shotgun the professional provides. In the future I would expect the same respect and professionalism you wish to receive and that you and your moderators enforce. I had hoped to be able to learn as well as help others at this site but I will not allow you or anyone to criticize me. In the future you should just post your helpful hint and refrain from trying to make me out the fool.

.300 weatherbys method is a decent quick and dirty method of establishing L.O.P. . if your thumb is hitting your nose, it could be your gun is excessively short, or that your are incorrectly mounting and holding the gun. having a stock that is slightly too short is better than slightly too long, although you will never shoot either as well as you will a properly fit gun. as a side note, most guns come from the factory set up for a right handed shooter that is 5'10"-6' and about 180#'s.

If you're going to be one of those who find fault with every post I make and take every post as a personal insult to you then you'd probably be better off moving on to other places.

My comments had not one single thing to do with your post and if your post hadn't been there it would still have read the same. If what I say is a problem to you then either get over it or move on. I'm really tired of avoiding posting on a site I pay thousands of dollars per year from my pocket to support just so you guys can read and post for free only to be jumped on by someone every time I post.

:? I think Graybeard my have a point. I visited a large gun store that had all kinds of shotguns. The different guns standing side by side looked like the trigger pull was the same. When I brought them to my shoulder some mounted easy and some hit me in the face before I had the gun in place. Other caught on my shirt before they got to my shoulder. I think I will make me some disks and just keep adding them till it fills right. Thanks Guy SE Okla
