« on: April 18, 2005, 09:12:47 PM »
Looks like a guy down in soldotna got mauled this morning while jogging.  Brown bear sow with cubs on a moose kill.  That has to be about as dangerous situation as there gets.

78, Kenai Kid posted this over on the lever gun forum earlyer, guy out running with his dog and no fire arm, not a good move in that area. Used to live around that area late 70's early 80's. dint even go out to p__ without a fire arm. Course with fresh kill and cub/s makes it a real dangerous situation.

Things have changed a lot since the 70s, more urban.  And a different type of folks are moving here.  A lot of bunny huggers, and anti hunters.  The bears haven't changed thou.  Some people just can't get used to the fact that they are living in bear country, even in downtown Anchorage.  I guess I'm just as guilty as anyone else in that area, I'm always running around in back of the house with no gun.  A few years back I was out there with my beagles when they treaded a Black Bear.  Right in my back yard, there I stood no gun.  Anyway people are changing up here, but the bears aren't.  Look for more bear encounters of the close kind real soon.

Its not only unsafe in Alaska its not too safe in the lower 48 either. Even in the northeast here we have mountainlion and bears making a comeback too.  And with packs of coyotes running wild on the outskirts of cities here because there in the suburbs already. Not to mention bobcats too.  I fish all kinds of early morning hours and i see all this stuff.  These animals own the night for sure while were sleeping too.  So far there has been freshwater otters in each body of water i fish too and thats unheard of too.  You just have to be out there when the dark turns to dusk to dawn then you may see them too.  I think its going to get very bad soon with attacks here too because of the treehuggers here too.          BigBill

If you see a peta person being mauled by a bear do you let nature take its course?  For sure and try to record the screams too!!!!!

The fellow that was mauled was not an inexperienced cheechako.  I think this is the same Scott McInnus that had a run-in with a bear on the Resurrection Trail and detailed in one of the Alaska Bear Tales books a long time ago.

Yukon Jack:  You are right.  They reported it in today's paper that he is the same person that got mauled as a kid on the Ressurection Trail.
