I was looking for a 357mag 6" barrel and i found three colt troopers that have been ported? Why do you port a 357mag? BigBill

Well, after 1976 posts I take it you know why porting is an option. So, I guess it would be the same for the .357MAG. I really cant thing of a better or specific reason.

I think his point is more along the lines of "why would anyone feel the need to port a 6 inch .357"? I agree. I have a 6 inch GP100, and its a pussycat with even the heaviest loads, no porting required here. I might be able to see it on a snubby, but I don't care for ports even then. The muzzle blast is way worse than the recoil. reakin

I have a GP 100 6" myself and don't feel the need for ports, But, I have shot an identical GP that had been magna ported, recoil feels about the same but there is almost no muzzle climb it was a piece of pie to keep it on target with the same loads as mine. Not worth the bucks to me thou, I rarly need a quick follow up shot.

I think the gun shop had three colt troopers in the case with 6" barrels and they all were ported. It just didn't make sense to me. BigBill

Bigbill,

Though I don't know for sure, I suspect that porting a .357 may control the amount of barrel rise and help a person to reestablish a site picture more quickly.

I have seen porting on everything including a 22LR. I was told it was for faster target pick up. I have only found the need for it on my 500MAG.

I was looking at the .500MAG the other day in 4" ich bll. . All I could wonder to my self is what it would be like with no porting.

What a ride it would be, I guess. :?

I'd like to see a 500S&W mag like a colt python design with the weight under the barrel also the whole length of the barrel that would control some of the kick. The added diameter of the weight can change going smaller were it begins to larger as it goes towards the front. But the frame also has to be a tad larger so the balance is still ok too. I just think that S&W could of done a better job with the 500S&W mag gun maybe ruger will. BigBill
