Dakota Model 10 Ideas
« on: April 19, 2005, 04:44:05 PM »
A customer wants to pay me in part with an unsed Dakota magnum model 10 (action only no barrel). He values it around $1500, which seems reasonable.  I am inclined to do it and barrel it in 375 H&H or 338 Winchester.  Any thoughts on barrels, stock makers, calibers, or smiths.  Currently have a 50/70 roller, and 30-06.

Your thoughts most are appreciated.

SS rifles present some difficulties compared to bolt actions.  Getting scope bases milled to fit a custom barrel or milling the quarter rib so that they are level is more difficult.  The barrel contour must be selected so that the fore end hanger has adequate clearance.

Caliber would depend on what you would want to hunt or do with the gun when it is finished.

I took the Dakota action, as they say better than a sharp stick in the eye.  Turns out it was set up as a .375 H&H.  Considering what a finished Model 10 cost, and what he owes me, might as well make it a rifle

Talked with the folks at Lilja about an octagon barrel, and with Wichita Arms about chambering and fitting as well as sights, and QT scope base mounts.  Going to Wichita with action so I can get milling dimensions for barrel

Action is in white, and is chrome moly so open to finish options, which I need to figure out before ordering barrel, chrome moly or ss?

As I can stretch out this project will probably have action engraved, thinking about Mark Swanson for this and using Wenig for the stock work.  Any Ideas greatly appreciated.
